Boys Soccer: Tigers remain unbeaten, down Irish 2-1

Rosemount finally dented the Farmington goal but it wasn't enough as the Tigers remained unbeaten with a 2-1 win over the Irish Tuesday, Sept. 1, at Tiger Stadium.
The Tigers moved to 3-0-1 for the season, the team's best start in the history of the program.
The victory was a true team effort with Blake Smith and Brandon Scott supplying the goals, keeper Cad Stivers piling up a season-high 15 saves and the stingy Tiger defense limiting the Irish scoring chances.
The Rosemount goal was the first by a Farmington opponent this season, coming with 9:12 remaining in the second half with the Tigers holding a 2-0 lead.
Smith gave the Tigers a 1-0 advantage seven minutes into the opening half when he bounced a corner kick off of an Irish defender and into the net.
"After watching how quickly Lakeville North got into their corner kicks we decided to speed up our delivery," Tiger coach Julian Buss said. "I think Blake caught the Rosemount keeper off guard...It's great to have two goals off corner kicks in the first four games."
Brandon Scott made it 2-0 midway through the second half on passes from Reid Wolf and Cole Landwehr.
Rosemount's score seemed to amp up the visitors play as they put increased pressure on the Farmington net but Stivers and his defenders prevailed for the team's first-ever win over their neighbors to the north.
"After they scored we responded with solid aggressive play," Buss said.
The game was physical in nature with Smith and teammate Tyler Petter-McCauley each receiving caution cards. Senior captain Sam Leske required stitches for a a head cut and according to Buss could miss a game or two.
The Tigers bounce back into action Tuesday, Sept. 6, with a non-conference road clash at Hastings. They open Missota Conference play Thursday with a home game against Northfield.

Girls Soccer: Tigers halt losing skid with 3-0 shutout of John Marshall

Ashley Kimmel scored twice and Farmington (3-2)registered its second shutout of the young season while halting a two-game losing streak in a 3-0 win over Rochester John Marshall Thursday, Sept. 1, at steamy Tiger Stadium.
With a game-time temperature in the low 90's and a heat index of nearly 100, Tiger coach Rob Carpentier said he had to make maximum use of his bench.
"We had to substitute liberally to keep the girls fresh and hydrated," he said. "JM was tougher than Faribault and Waconia so this was a good win for us. Most of the possessions were in their end of the field and we had lots of quality chances.
"Our intensity in the second half didn't match that of the first half but we did pick up the pace again about half way through...The captains are doing a good job on putting the team on their shoulders mentally and helping the younger girls get used to playing at this level."
Kimmel's pair of goals gives her seven of the 13 Farmington scores for the season. The third score came from sophomore Kenya Macias, her second of the year. Kimmel, Macias and Kelli Harstad each recorded assists for the winners.
The Tigers outshot the Rockets by a whopping 26-3 with Sydney Eckert going the distance in goal.
"We are going to build on this win and look to finish better as well as continue to build up an effort and intensity that lasts 80 minutes," Carpentier said.
The Tigers continue non-conference play Tuesday, Sept. 6 with a game at Hastings. Two days later they open their Missota Conference schedule against Northfield at Tiger Stadium.

Girls Tennis: Kennedy holds off Tigers 5-2

Maggie Rudorfer 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 2 singles

Farmington edged Bloomington Kennedy by a point to finish second in the season-opening Mound Doubles Invitational two weeks ago but the Eagles prevailed 5-2 in the rematch played Wednesday, Aug. 31, at the Boeckman Middle School courts.
"It was a great chance for us to break through," coach Jack Olwell said, "but Kennedy had other plans. For awhile it looked like we were going to get out of there with a 4-3 win but again we fell just short."
The Tiger points came at second and third singles where Maggie Rudorfer played her best tennis of the season in in a 6-1, 6-2 victory and Melanie Kappes cruised to 6-0, 6-3 win.
"Maggie dominated from the baseline and Melanie toughed out a difficult second set," Olwell said.
The No. 1 doubles tandem of Katie Burgess and Ally Midboe rallied from a 1-6 first-set loss to take the second and force a tie-breaker in the third before eventually losing.
Megan Stivers followed a similar trail at fourth singles, rallying from a first set loss to win the second before losing 4-6 in a hard-fought third set.
The Tigers close out a busy three-match week with a road dual meet Thursday, Sept. 1, versus Simley in Inver Grove Heights.
