Boys Cross Country: Tigers 7th at Dakota Classic

With a new coach and new-look starting lineup the Tigers put together a seventh place finish at the nine-team Dakota County Classic held Friday, Sept. 2, in Eagan.
Lakeville South edged South Suburban Conference rival Eastview 60-74 to take home the team championship. Host Eagan placed third with 91 points, followed by Hill-Murray 103, New Prague 116, Hastings 125, Farmington 166, Richfield 181 and Simley 225.
First-year coach Lisa Lippold said she wasn't as concerned as much with her team's final ranking as she was the time spread among the varsity runners.
"Our spread from runners one through five was just 26 seconds and that is very good," Lippold said. "Now we have to work on lowering the individual times.
"This was a good meet for us, especially considering we had so many guys who were running in their first varsity race."
The top five Tiger finishers crossed the finish line in a clump between 23rd and 40th place in the talented 77-runner field.
Sophomore Dan Block led the way with a 23rd place effort in a time off 11:29.3 over the 3200-meter course.
Adam Wallenta finished 29th (11:39.6); Caleb Eiffert 36th (11:53.3); Patrick Sunderman 38th (11:54) and Jordan Lugowski 40th (11:55.4).
Jake Rudeen (45th; 12:07.5) and Jordan Marcell (57th; 12:55.1) rounded out the Farmington scorecard.
The Tigers have until next Friday to work on lowering their finishing times. That's when they head south to run in the Faribault Invitational at Alexander North Park.

With two of the top three runners from last year's varsity team confined to training runs in the junior varsity race due to injuries, the Tigers finished 10th in an 11-team field at the Dakota County Championships run Friday, Sept. 2, in Eagan.
Lakeville South downed host Eagan 35-64 for the team title. Apple Valley ranked third at 95 points, followed by Forest Lake 101, Eastview 163, New Prague 178, Richfield 213, Hill-Murray 216, Hastings 219, Farmington 244 and Simley 287.
"We had some girls who had put in a lot work over the summer so it was a little disappointing that we didn't finish a little higher," coach Heidi Revels said. "But the times were decent. This was just a very competitive field."
Revels went on to say that her team's lack of depth played a key role in its lower division finish.
"We only had seven girls in the junior varsity race today," she said. "When you have veteran runners like Bailey (Opsal) and Maricia (Pacheco) unable to run varsity that doesn't leave many girls left...But it was a starting point and something to build on."
Junior Amy Kiminski led the Farmington effort with a 31st place finish, covering the 3200-meter course in 13:18.5.
Sofia Chadwick ranked 37th in 13:29.9; Maricella Pacheco 54th in 14:34.3; Tori Jacoby 57th in 14:37.6; Alexis Johnson 65th in 14:44.5; Sarah Cummings 66th in 14:53.2 and Marissa Stewart 67th in 14:59.1.

Rosemount rolled to a 25-8 first-game win on the way to a 3-0 non-conference victory over Farmington Thursday, Sept. 1, at Rosemount. The Irish won the final two contests 25-20 and 25-13.
The defeat was the first of the season for coach Mike Woody's team who defeated Albert Lea and Austin in its first two outings.
"We grew a lot on Thursday," Woody said. "Rosemount was probably one of the best defensive teams we will see all year and they put it to us in game one. We clearly played our worst game of the season.
"But for this group to bounce back and play really well in games two and three was a huge step. In the end, they outplayed us defensively."
Offensive highlights were few and far between for the visitors who converted just 24 percent of their kill opportunities (17 for 71). Allie Pierskalla and Bekah Lippert topped the Farmington charts with five and four respectively.
Ruthanne Schmitt had a team-high seven set assists and Mia Johnston added six. Schmitt chipped in with a pair of service aces.
Rachel Eckert and Emma Fahning led in digs with 16 and 12 respectively. Four Tigers reached double figures in service receptions: Eckert and Fahning with 15 apiece; Laura Steege with 14 and Emily Nelson with 11. Lippert and Courtney Johnston each recorded a trio of blocked shots.
The Tigers look to rebound from the defeat next Thursday, Sept. 8, when they kick off their Missota Conference season at Red Wing.
"The conference should be interesting," Woody said. "Shakopee, Chaska and Chanhassen are very talented and after that everything is up for grabs."

Girls Tennis: Simley tops Tigers 6-1
The Tigers closed the books on a busy second week of the 2011 season with a 6-1 dual meet loss to Simley Thursday, Sept. 1, in Inver Grove Heights.
The contest followed a familiar early season pattern with the visiting Tigers unable to win the close ones.
"We played well and had a chance to make it a lot closer than the final score showed," Tiger coach Jack Olwell said. "We lost two final set-tie-breakers....I liked our progress and toughness."
The Farmington point came from Megan Stivers who won a three-set tie-breaker at fourth singles.
"It was too hot to play a full third set," Olwell said. "Megan played her usual tenacious match."
Melanie Kappes lost a third set tie-breaker at third singles as did the second doubles tandem of ShyAnne Spurzem and Tasha Sinha.
The Tigers are off until after the Labor Day holiday weekend when they entertain Burnsville Tuesday, Sept. 6, on the Boeckman Middle School courts.
