Boys Basketball: Storm blow by Tigers

League-leading Chanhassen (12-1) outscored Farmington (6-7) 47-19 in the second half in an 85-48 Missota Conference win over the Tigers Tuesday night in Chanhassen.
The loss snuffed out the Tigers' three-game conference win streak and left them with an overall mark of 10-15 with one regular season contest remaining, a league home game with Red Wing Friday night.
Farmington kept within shouting distance of the Storm in the opening half, trailing 38-29 at the break. For the next 18 minutes, however, it was no contest.
Chanhassen made 10 of 12 three-point shots in the second half, showing why it will take home the conference title.
Though the Storm was a heavy favorite, Tiger coach Shane Wyandt was disappointed in his team's lack of effort and execution.
"We showed no energy or the effort that we've been playing with lately," he said. "They (Chanhassen) are a very talented team so I can handle getting beat but not the way we got beat. We looked like a scared team. They out-played us in every aspect of the game."
With top-scorer Darren Beenken home with the flu, Mackinley Bassett and Nick Varner shouldered most of the offensive burden for the Tigers, scoring 17 and 11 points respectively.
With section seeding scheduled for this weekend, Wyandt is hoping that his team's lackluster performance in Chanhassen will serve as a motivator.
"I hope we use this as a last wake up call as we finish the conference season and head into playoffs," he said. "The seeding race is still extremely tight so we need another win."

Girls Hockey: Academic State Champs!
The Tigers haven't played in the girls state hockey tournament since 2008 but that doesn't mean they haven't added to their already bulging trophy case.
On the ice the girls won back-to-back Missota Conference crowns in 2010 and 2011 and in the classroom they won two straight Section 1AA academic championships.
This year the Tigers made it three consecutive section academic titles and on Sunday coach Jon Holmes and his team learned they had been named the the 2012 Class AA academic state champions
Two of the four senior captains, Jessica Erchul and Katie Burgess, accepted the award at the Ms. Hockey banquet held at the Xcel Energy Center.
Holmes said he and his players realize the object of the games is to win and everyone strives to bring home the conference and section championships.
"But when you really dive into what we preach and what we strive for as far as life lessons learned in athletics," he said. "This award is probably the most prestigious that a team can earn.
"It's a huge honor and all the credit goes to the girls since they are the ones who find themselves studying at away games and setting up structures where upperclassmen help the younger players with their academics."
The Tiger coach explained that the 12 highest grade-point averages of rostered players are used to determine the team average with the 13th, 14th and 15th highest averages used as tie-breakers.
Farmington's cumulative average was an impressive 3.854 on a perfect 4.000 scale.
"That was good enough to make us the smartest team in Minnesota," Holmes said. "We made winning the section award again one of our pre-season goals and I know it was in the back of the girls' minds throughout the year. We are very proud of them."

Gymnastics: Lorencz state runner-up in vault

Nadia Lorencz picked up her third second place state meet medal in nine months by finishing runner-up in the vaulting competition at the Class AA state gymnastics meet held Saturday night at the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion.
Last spring the talented junior placed second in both the 100-meter hurdles and the long jump at the Class AA state track and field meet.
Lorencz ranked 10th in vaulting at the 2011 state gymnastics meet.
All in all, Lorencz qualified for this year's state finals in three individual events and the all-around competition. In addition to her all-state performance in vault (9.7875), she ranked 11th in floor exercise (9.525); 19th in all-around (36.4125) and 28th on the balance beam (8.275).
"Nadia's first vault was almost perfect," Tiger coach Lynn Bauman said. "On the beam she was great but she had one fall and one break in her routine that took away from her score.
"The last event was floor and she was the first one (to perform), something she wasn't used to. But she made everything and performed like an all-star...Overall, she had a fun and exciting day. She was happy with her performance and so were her coaches."
Lorencz's runner-up finish in the vault matched the second-best by a Tiger at state in school history, equaling coach Bauman's second place effort in the same event in 1990. Buaman (Gramentz) owns the only Farmington gymnastics state title, winning floor exercise in 1991.
