Boys Golf: On to the second round

Tommy May one-over par 74
Farmington's seventh place finish in the opening round of the Section 1AA Championships Thursday at Bellwood Oaks was a little lower than coach Jon Holmes would have liked, but it still got the job done.

The Tigers who totaled 326 strokes (low four scores) moved on to the final round scheduled back at the Hastings course next Monday.

"We had three pretty good scores but we couldn't seem to get that much-needed fourth," Holmes said. "We were hoping to be in the top four after the first round."

Lakeville North built a commanding nine-stroke lead with a low team total of 303. Rochester Century ranked second at 312, followed by Owatonna 316, Albert Lea 319, Winona 320, Faribault 324, Farmington 326, Red Wing 328, Mayo 331, Rochester John Marshall 331, Northfield 343 and Austin 348.

Farmington senior Tommy May continued his recent excellent play with a one-over par round of 74, just three shots behind leader Peter Jones of Owatonna..

"Tommy put himself in a position to get to the state meet," Holmes said. "He came into the section with much more confidence than last year and it paid off. He's definitely found his scoring game at the right time."

Erik Holmstrom 3-over par final 14 holes
Erik Holmstrom rallied from a shaky five-over par first four holes to finish at 81 and Ryan Kelly posted 82. Mitch Reed checked in at 89 and Tony Lalani and Jake Hanson each shot 90.

As for his players' chances in round two, Holmes says he is optimistic.

"Lakeville North is a one-team show right now," he said, "but hopefully Tommy will keep up his consistent play and get to the big show...With a career-round perhaps Erik and Ryan could also make a run."
