Girls Tennis: A roaring good start

2012 Mound Doubles Invitational champions
The 2012 season couldn't have started any better for coach Jack Olwell and his Tiger netters.

Farmington swept the top three flights on the way to a first place finish in the three-team Mounds Doubles Invitational played Monday in Mound.

The Tigers edged host Mound-Westonka 9-8 for the title. Bloomington finished a distant third with a single point.

"We played outstanding doubles throughout the day," Olwell said. "The highlight was an amazing come-from-behind victory at No. 2 by Beth Fairchild and Ryan Jara...but that was just one of many compelling matches.

"This is our first tournament win in more than 10 years and I am fairly certain it is the first time we have ever swept the top three positions in this one."

At the top of the ladder, freshmen Claire Padrnos and Lindsey Fairchild went 2-0 to win their flight and set up the heroics at the second slot.

Freshman Beth Fairchild and eighth-grader Jara fell behind quickly in the first set before rallying for a hard-fought 4-6, 6-3 (7-5) win.

Junior Megan Stivers teamed with ninth-grader Callie Olmscheid for another sweep at the third position for two more Farmington points.

The senior tandems of Tasha Sinha and Rachel Rees and ShyAnne Spurzem and Liz Adams each went 1-1 in the fourth and fifth flights and senior Heather Kelzenberg and freshman Molly Rudorfer also split their two matches.

"It was, of course, a great start for us," Olwell said, "but there is much work to be done and plenty of good teams just around the bend."

The Tigers open their dual meet season Thursday, Aug. 23, with a non-conference match against Faribault at the Boeckman Middle School courts.
