Krystal Baumann and Hannah Alexander scored power play goals and goalie Jessica Erchul stopped all 15 shots she faced as the Tigers shutout New Prague 2-0 Thursday night, Dec. 2, at Schmitz-Maki Arena.
The Missota Conference victory ran Farmington's record to 5-3 overall and a perfect 3-0 in league play. New Prague, who beat Holy Angels 3-2 in its conference opener, dropped to 5-2 and 1-1.
"New Prague came in 5-1 so we knew we had to play with some spunk," coach Jon Holmes said. "We played well in all zones, especially in our defensive end. We still have a lot of work to do in that capacity but it was good to see the work we put in in practice pay off."
Alexander scored the first Tiger goal on assists from Betsy Anderson and Rachel Peroutky after the Trojans were whistled for their third penalty just 6:45 into the opening period.
Baumann notched the second goal, her 14th of the season, early in the second period to close the scoring. Anderson and Peroutky again provided assists.
Erchul, who had not allowed fewer than three goals in her first six outings. posted the 18th shutout of her varsity career
The margin of victory could have been larger had the Tigers capitalized on more of their many scoring opportunities. Farmington outshot its guests by a lopsided 38-15 margin.
"Despite only two goals on all of those shots we did manage to put together three periods of hockey with minimal mistakes," Holmes said. "We definitely will continue to get better as the season progresses."
Tuesday, Dec. 7, the Tigers travel to Eden Prairie (5-0-2) to take on one of the top teams in the Lake Conference.
