All of the early outside work on a snow-lined parking lot paid big dividends for the Tigers Monday afternoon in a season-opening 7-0 shutout victory over Bloomington Kennedy at the Boeckman Middle School courts.

The dominant win featured strong play by a Farmngton team that won all seven matches in straight sets.

Veteran coach Jack Olwell said he liked what he saw from his squad in the season opener.

"It was a good day at the office," he said. "We played well up and down the lineup, but especially at singles.

"I think being outside in the elements longer than every other team in the metro has given us a quick start and it showed today."

The Tigers won the four singles matches by a combined score of 48-7 with Bennett Lagro and Jake Bauer scoring identical 6-1, 6-0 decisions at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots.

"Bennett displayed a lot of poise by winning all of the close games," Olwell said, "and Jake showed penetrating strokes with a strong serve."

Ivan Rodriguez won 6-0, 6-1 at the third singles slot and Grady Hauswirth posted a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 4.

Trent Kortenbusch and Jon Zakoski made their debut at No. 1 doubles a success with a solid 6-3, 6-2 victory.

"They showed a lot of improvement over last year as they moved up from No. 2 and No. 3 doubles," Olwell said.

Austin Rau and Austin Tremmel cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at second doubles and the No. 3 team of Drew Corraro and Jake Spindler got out of some early trouble to record a 7-5, 6-2 triumph.

"They saved a set point with some fine net play," Olwell said.

Weather permitting, the Tigers entertain Lakeville South Tuesday back at the Boeckman courts.
