Eight Tiger athletes earned the right to perform on the big stage of the state track meet with first or second place efforts at last Saturday's Section 1AA Championships held at Lakeville South.

Sophomore iron man Justin Hyytinen had his fingerprints on three of the Farmington state qualifying efforts, taking second in the 1600-meter rum in 4:23.58 and running a leg on the winning 4x800 and second place 4x400 relay teams.

Tyler Lerbakken, Devon Webb and Jared Wolt joined Hyytinen in winning 4x800 relay in a school record 8:03.80 and Lerbakken, Hyytinen, Tommy Weigel and Tanner Grubb made up the victorious 4x400 team that clocked 3:28.14.

The quartet of Mason Auge, Ryan Parco, Weigel and Grubb took second in the 4x200 in 1:30.79  to earn its trip to state.

"This meet is all about getting people to the state meet," Tiger coach Brian Helmstetter. "Winning the team championship would be nice but that would be a bonus."

The Tigers didn't win the team title but did finish in a second place tie with Owatonna with 70 points, 12 fewer than champion Rochester Century.

Lakeville North and Faribault finished two points back in fourth place, followed by Winona 64, Kasson-Mantorville 56, Lakeville South 52, Austin 45, Rochester John Marshall 40, Rochester Mayo 39, Red Wing 21, Northfield 17, Dover-Eyota/St. Charles 5 and Albert Lea 5.

Two Tigers finished within a place of making the state meet field. Lerbakken ranked third in the 400-meter run and Wolt took third in the 800-meter run.

Nehemiah Rockett finished fourth and fifth respectively in the 110 and 300-meter hurdles and Grubb scored fourth place points in the open 200 meters.

Auge clocked a season-best in his sixth place finish in the 100-meter dash and Dan Berg placed seventh in the high jump.

Conner Phu took eighth in the pole vault and Jacob Earp placed eighth in the long jump.

"The boys knew what they had to do today and for the most part they did what we expected," Helmstetter said. "It will be interesting to see how they do next week."

Tanner Grubb anchored two state meet relays
Helmstetter stayed away from making any predictions for next weekend, saying only that he expected his state entrants to be "competitive" at state..

"There are some awfully good times around the state in the events we will be running," he said. "Stillwater may break the state record in the 4x800. It will be great competition."

The state meet finals are slated for Saturday morning at Hamline.

Girls Track: Ferm, relay headed to state

Junior Isabelle Ferm battled through a sore hip to defend her Section 1AA 400-meter title in 57.43, a new school record, to earn a return trip to the state meet at the Section 1AA Championships held Saturday at Lakeville South.

Ferm, who finished sixth in the 400 at state last year, also teamed up with Maria Kiminski, Alicia Hett and Megan Graham to take second in the 4x400 relay in a season-best 4:01.60  to punch their return ticket to state.

Ferm, Graham and Hett all ran on the same relay team that placed sixth at last year's state finals.

The Tigers also had four third place finishes, one place short of qualifying for the state meet.

"We had some very good performances today and it's always good to have our girls going back to state," coach Tom Hart said. "It's mildly disappointing to come so close in so many other events, but that is the nature of track. You only get one shot at state."

The Tigers finished third in the final 15-team standings. Lakeville South ran away with the title, finishing with 190 points. Lakeville North took second with 123, followed by Farmington 58, Rochester Century 56, Winona 41, Rochester Mayo 34, Austin 33, Dover-Eyota/St. Charles 27, Rochester John Marshall 27, Northfield 26, Owatonna 23,  Albert Lea 19, Red Wing 18, Kasson-Mantorville 17and Faribault 10

The four Tiger entrants that finished just out of the state meet sweepstakes were the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x800 relays and Destiny Schmitz in the triple jump.

Schmitz came the closest to the state berth, actually tying for second place with a distance of 35-2.75 but losing the state bid on a tie-breaker.

"Destiny broke her personal best by almost two feet," Hart said. "She had a great day."

The third place 4x800 team consisted of Kiminski, Hett, Alex Frost and Sofia Chadwick. Kelli Elmer, Nicole Doran, Morgan Cecchittini and Emma Record ran the 4x100 and Racquel Beckett, Jennifer Miller, Cecchittini and Graham competed in the 4x200.

Defending state 100-meter hurdles and long jump champion Nadia Lorencz returned to the track after suffering an ankle injury earlier in the year and scored a pair of fourth place finishes in those events.

Missota Conference shot put champion Aly Grebner ranked seventh in the section meet as did Schmitz in the high jump. Record took eighth in the 100 and 200-meter dashes.

The state meet will be held next Friday and Saturday at Hamline University on St. Paul.

Girls Golf: Swenson to Section 1AAA finals

Brianna Swenson
Farmington's team season officially came to halt Thursday with an 11th place finish at the 12-team Section 1AAA Championships at Cannon Golf Club in Cannon Falls.

Junior Brianna Swenson's 2013 season will live on for at least another day, however, as her round of 107 qualified her for the final round of section individual play slated for Monday back in Cannon Falls.

Swenson also qualified for the Section 1AAA finals last season where she finished 30th overall.

Northfield and Red Wing tied for the opening round team lead with a total of 356 strokes. Lakeville North and Rochester Mayo finished three shots back at 359, followed by Owatonna 377, Winona 383, Albert Lea 398, Austin 408, Rochester John Marshall 421, Faribault 433, Farmington 474, Rochester Century 489.

Sidney Comes shot 120, Halea Wright 122, Alexis House 125 and Kaitlin Jokinen 128 to round out the Farmington scorecard.

Against all odds: Tigers back to state

Taylor Yousse slides in with winning run in game one (photo by Jim Lindquist)
It took almost four hours, including two rain delays and a miracle four-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one, but at the end of the day the Tigers were right where they wanted to be all along, back in the state tournament.

Farmington claimed its second straight Section 1AAA title with back-to-back wins over Hastings Friday afternoon in Northfield.

Molly Berdan's two-out single capped a frenetic seventh inning comeback in a 7-6 win in the opener. Ashley Betzold's four-hitter and run-scoring double keyed a 3-1 victory in the nightcap that officially punched her team's return ticket to Mankato.

Coach Paul Harrington, who has taken seven teams to the state tournament in his 11 years of high school coaching, said he was stunned following the sweep of the Raiders who had defeated his team by a run earlier in the week.

"In all my years of softball, I have never seen anything like the comeback in the first game," he said. "We have come from behind to win several games this year, but nothing like that. These girls just never quit."

The Tigers (20-5) will open state meet play Thursday morning at 9:00 a.m. against Section 7AAA champion Forest Lake (22-2) at Caswell Park in Mankato.

BEFORE
Things couldn't have started much worse for the Tigers as the Raiders plated two runs in their first at-bat thanks largely to a miscommunication on a potential force out at second base.

Amber Doyle, who has been red-hot in the section tourney, got one of those scores back in the bottom of the inning with a booming home run over the right-centerfield fence.

The teams traded runs in the third inning before Hastings extended its lead to 6-2 with a three-run outburst in the fourth.

Toni Hunsinger's run-scoring double made it 6-3 in the fifth, but with three outs to go in the home half of the seventh the defending section champions were on the ropes.

Doyle doubled to open the seventh and came around to score on back-to-back singles by Hunsinger and Kendall Novak. Jordyn Keprios moved the runners into scoring position with a ground out to first to set up the dramatic finish.

First, Taylor Yousse came up with a clutch single to make it 6-5. After Mackenzie Bauer grounded out, lead-off hitter Carly Esselman walked set the stage for Berdan who lined the ball down the right field line for the game-winner.

"They had pitched us outside on Tuesday, so were trying to take the pitch to the right side all night," Harrington said. "We hit a lot of balls to rightfield."

Farmington actually hit the ball all over the field, finishing the contest with 15 hits, including three apiece by Doyle and Berdan and two each by Esselman, Hunsinger and Betzold.

Hastings touched Betzold for 10 hits. The senior righthander struck out five and walked one.

Betzold, who seems to get stronger the longer she pitches, was the story in game two. She gave up a run on four hits through four innings before retiring the final nine batters she faced.

"Ashley just took the ball and got it done," Harrington said. "She showed  a lot of senior leadership."

The Tigers took the lead in the bottom of the second when Keprios reached on an error and scored on Yousse's triple to right-center.

The winners made it 3-0 in the third on a single by Berdan, a run-scoring double by Betzold and Hunsinger's sacrifice fly.

The Raiders scored their lone run in the top of the fourth on a pair of hits but the Tigers escaped further damage by perfectly executing a run down for the final out.

"With all of the bad weather we've had this spring, we've had a lot of time to work on things like that," assistant coach Loren Cartwright said.

The Tiger defense played errorless ball in the game, a fact not lost on Harrington.

"Pitching and defense wins in this game," he said. "It's as simple as that."

Betzold had two of the seven Tiger hits in the contest. Doyle, Berdan, Keprios, Novak and Yousse had the others.

Last spring the Tigers made their first state tournament appearance since 2003 and lost two games. Harrington hopes the return trip to Mankato will end differently.

"We have some players who have been through it once and that should help," he said, "but you have to remember all of the teams down there will be tough. There are no poor teams in the state tournament."
