The Athena Award is presented to the outstanding senior female athlete from each school designated as part of the St. Paul region. The local winner is chosen based on excellence in team and/or individual sports.
Coaches nominated senior athletes for the award and then the selected candidates compiled resumes of their accomplishments. A vote of the FHS varsity coaches determined the honoree.
Recent Tigers winners of the award include Taylor Meyer (2012); Devyn Alberts (2011), Sam Jensen (2010), Kirstee Rotty (2009), Rachel Ripley (2008), Erin Johnson (2007) and Kallie Flor (2006).
Lorencz's athletic career at FHS has been filled with success in three different sports.
She earned varsity letters in soccer in ninth and 10th grade, winning the Most Improved Player Award as a sophomore.
In 10th and 11th grades Lorencz was a key contributor to the girls' gymnastics program, twice qualifying for the Class AA state meet. In 2012, she qualified for state in three events and all-around and finished runner-up in vault. She owns individual school records in both vault and floor exercise.
Lorencz's biggest successes, however, have come in track and field. Last spring she was the Class AA state champion in the 100 meter hurdles and long jump after earlier winning Missota Conference titles in those two events and the triple jump. She also placed fourth at state in the triple jump.
Lorencz has been named to the all-Missota Conference track and field team three times and holds school records in the long jump, triple jump and 100 hurdles.
The Tiger senior will receive her award at a recognition banquet scheduled for April 17 at the Prom Center in Oakdale.
