Andrew Peterson’s goal with 1:56 to play in the third period tied the game as Farmington skated to a 2-2 tie with Rochester John Marshall in boys hockey action Tuesday night at Schmitz-Maki Arena.

The Rockets (0-0-1) opened the scoring at the 14:06 mark of the first period on Kyle Andrews’ goal. Nick Paulson and Jared Bromberg were credited with assists.

Kevin Olund tied the game 3:32 into the second period for the Tigers (0-0-1), scoring on a rebound after the initial shot from the point was blocked. John Donnelly and Sean Johnson picked up assists on the first Tiger goal of the season.

Tied heading to the third, John Marshall used a power play goal from Gavin Sandwick to take a 2-1 lead. Alex Lovett and Ryan Lakin earned assists.

That set the stage for Peterson, who picked up a loose puck in the slot and slid it past the John Marshall goaltender. Grant Hauswirth picked up the lone assist on the game-tying goal.

Peterson had a breakaway opportunity with under 10 seconds to play in overtime, but was stopped by Rockets goaltender Jacob Garvey who made 21 saves.

“It’s a good sign that we can keep our composure,” Farmington head coach Keith Revels said. “We got down, came back, got down, came back. We dealt well with adversity tonight.”

Farmington goaltender Victor Simones stopped 32 of 34 shots for the Tigers.

“[Victor] is going to need to be consistent all year for us to be successful,” Revels said.

John Marshall was 1-for-5 on the power play while Farmington did not have an opportunity with the man advantage.

Revels was content with the play of his team, especially his young players, many of whom made their varsity debuts.

“We had nearly half our players in their first varsity action,” Revels said. “The speed of the game is the biggest difference for those guys.”

“All were pretty solid. They look like they belong.”

The Tigers will next play Thursday at Schmitz-Maki Arena when they host Rochester Century at 7:15 p.m.
