"They (Hastings) were a tough opening-game opponent," Farmington coach Keith Revels said. "They have 13 players back from last year's section finals team and we had seven guys playing their first varsity game ever.
"We continued to get better as the night went on and that is something we can build on as we move forward. We are young and a work in progress."
In the opening period, the Raiders put constant pressure on Tiger goalie Nick Schoening who started just his second varsity game in the nets. The result was a 4-1 Farmington deficit heading into the second stanza.
"We left Nick hanging with guys in front a couple of times," Revels said. "He got a lot of on-the-job experience today."
Kevn Olund scored the lone Farmington goal of the period on the power play.
The remainder of the contest was much more competitive with the Raiders outscoring their guests 2-1 over the final two periods.
Justin Novak's first career goal (from Olund) made it a 5-2 in the second period and the Tigers thought the deficit was trimmed further with six minutes remaining in the third when a Farmington goal was disallowed.
"It was controversial," Revels said. "It could have made things interesting."
Hastings outshot the Tigers 26-19 for the night with Schoening recording 20 saves in the losing effort.
The Tigers hit the ice again Tuesday when they travel to Rochester to take on Section 1AA rival John Marshall at the Rochester Recreation Center.
