Volleyball: Tigers 6th at Cannon Falls

Farmington went unbeaten in pool play and placed sixth in the 12-team Cannon Falls Invitational tournament played Saturday in Cannon Falls.

"The tournament went quite well for us," Tiger coach Mike Woody said. "Overall I was pleased with our play.

"We went 2-0 in our pool and then didn't play very well against Waterville. But we bounced back with a win over Plainview. We played well against Cannon Falls in the fifth place match but just not well enough to win."

In pool play the Tigers defeated Ellsworth (WI) 25-12, 27-25 and Rochester Lourdes 25-12, 25-16.

Against Lourdes Emma Fahning led the way with  six kills, 10 digs, seven serve receptions and a pair of serving aces. Emily Nelson had a team-high eight kills. Rachel Eckert added seven digs and Diana Comes chipped in with five serve receptions. Mia Johnston was tops in assists with nine.

In the win over Ellsworth the Tigers got key contributions from several players.

Kaylene Seurer led in kills and blocks with six apiece. Fahning, Courtney Johnston and Ruthie Schmitt each added four kills. Makenzie Hesse led in digs with 10 and Comes had eight as well as a trio serving aces. Fahning and Comes were tops in serve receptions with 14 and 10 respectively.

In the opening round of championship round play the Tigers fell to Waterville-Morristown-Elysian 23-25, 14-25.

Fahning again put up some impressive numbers, finishing with team-highs in kills (5), digs (9) and serve receptions (12).  Schmitt had six assists and Mia Johnston and Lexi Wenskaug recorded five apiece. Seuere had a big match at the net with eight blocks and Eckert hit double digits in serve receptions with 10.

In the consolation semifinals, the Tigers bounced back for a 25-17, 25-21 victory over Plainview-Elgin-Millville.

Fahning had eight kills, Wenskaug 13 assists, Eckert six digs, Nelson nine serve receptions and Hesse three service aces to top the Farmington stat sheet.

The Tigers played a competitive match against the host Bombers in the fifth place game, losing 22-25 and 20-25.

Farmington statistical leaders in the tourney finale included Courtney Johnston, six kills; Wenskaug, nine assists; Comes, six digs; Eckert 15 serve receptions and Mia Johnston two service aces.

The 3-2 tournament run leaves the Tigers with a season mark of 12-13.

Tuesday the girls return to Missota Conference action with a home match against Holy Angels at Tiger Gym.
