The shutout loss was the fourth straight for Farmington who finished the 2012 campaign with an 8-8-1 record.
Although neither team scored in the game's first 30 minutes, they might have been the most important for the Tigers.
"The game went back and forth," Tiger coach Julian Buss said. "We came out fighting. We executed the game plan we had worked on in practice. We had chances, Mayo had chances. It was very exciting soccer."
But it was the Spartans who struck first, breaking the scoreless deadlock with a goal with 9:17 remaining in the half on a low, hard shot from the right wing.
The winners scored again early in the second half on a breakaway and then put things away with a score off a corner kick four minutes later.
"To say we had opportunities would be an understatement," Buss said. "We had six quality shots, six corner kicks and multiple direct kicks and fast beak opportunities."
"The boys did everything we asked. Every player knew his role and how they fit into the system. The communicated, worked their tails off and did their best. Wht more could I ask for as a coach?"
Buss said it is hard to say farewell to the 2012 season.
"I feel privileged to have been able to work with such a talented and motivated group," he said. "I think three words describe the group what finished out the season...commitment, effort and pride."
