The Tigers bounced back from a lopsided opening-night loss to Simley to give Rochester John Marshall a good battle in a 58-48 non-conference loss Friday night in Rochester.

"I am pleased with how much improvement we showed in just two games and against a very good John Marshall team," Tiger coach Sondra Chadwick said.

The first half was a nip-and tuck affair with the Rockets clinging to a 25-23 lead at the halftime break.

John Marshall's size inside began to take a toll in the second half as the Rockets began to gradually pull away. JM outscored their guests by a whopping 38-6 in the paint.

The size disparity also  took its toll at the foul line where the Rockets converted 19 of 24 chances while the Tigers went to the line just eight times, making five.

"We've just not found an answer for defending size yet," Chadwick said. "Clearly we have to do a better job of attacking the basket and drawing fouls."

The Tiger coach pointed to several improvements in her team's play from game one to game two.

"Our shooting percentage was (33 percent) was up and our defensive pressure was better," she said. "We also had 18 assists for the game."

Sofia Chadwick had a strong game for the Tigers in the losing effort, scoring a game-high 22 points. The sophomore point guard led her team in rebounds (8) and assists (5) and also had four steals.

Abby Gallus chipped in with 12 points and four assists. Alicia Hett scored six and had a solid floor game with fours assists and four steals.

Tuesday the Tigers return to Rochester for a date with Rochester Mayo.

"The girls continue to grow their confidence and hopefully that carries over onto next week's games," Chadwick said.
