Girls Hockey: Losing skid ends with tie

The good news is the Tigers' three game losing string is history; the bad news is that it ended with a tie rather than a win.

Farmington led Owatonna 2-0 early in the third period before surrendering two late scores and settling for a 2-2 draw with the Huskies Saturday night at Four Seasons Arena in Owatonna.

"There are positives to take away from the game," Tiger coach Jon Holmes said. "Our defense became much more active in the offensive zone and our forwards back-checked very well.

"But it just leaves a knot in the stomach after allowing them back in the game when it should have been put away and out of reach long before the third period."

The visitors got the better of the play through two periods with  Grace Gavin's second period score
(from Maddi Oines and Rachael Welzin) giving them a slim 1-0 lead.

The lead jumped to two goals early in the third period when Breanna Raske found the net but the Huskies scored midway through the third and added the tying goal with just a minute and a half left in regulation.

"The game was pretty lopsided in our favor and it stung more than any of our losses," Holmes said "We played a below average first period and then stepped it up slightly in the second and third, but overall still played very mediocre.

"We had some times when we just watched the play happen around us rather than join in or even dictate it. We just can't afford that with any of the teams on our schedule this year."

The official score sheet had Farmington with a 38-27 shots on-goal-advantage although Holmes said his team's stats showed it to be even greater.

Goalkeeper Maddie Bowe had a solid night in the nets with 25 saves, including five on breakaway opportunities.

The Tigers return to the ice Tuesday night hen they open Missota Conference play at Northfield.
