Girls BB: No. 3 Red Wing handles Tigers 54-37

Sofia Chadwick 21 points, 5 rebounds
When Farmington played at Red Wing last month the scoreboard could barely keep pace in a game that saw the No. 3 rated Wingers prevail 80-66 and their all-conference forward Tesha Buck forward light up the Tigers for 41 points.

In Friday night's rematch at Tiger Gym a feisty Farmington defense limited Red Wing and Buck to 54 and 19 points respectively only to get essentially the same result, a 54-37 loss.

"We wanted to slow the pace and get back in transition," said Tiger coach Sondra Chadwick whose team was coming off a loss to No. 4 rated Chaska on Tuesday. "We did a pretty good job, especially in the first half, but we couldn't knock down in any shots."

Red Wing bolted to a 17-3 lead thanks largely to ice cold Tiger shooting and a rash of untimely turnovers.

The deficit was 21-18 before Sofia Chadwick led a closing 8-2 run that made it a 23-16 game at intermission.

The start of the second half mirrored the first with the Tigers missing their first seven shots and whiffing on five of six free throws while the Wingers made a red-hot 10 of their first 12 shots from the floor.

The Wingers' biggest lead came at 49-29 and overshadowed an outstanding second half by sophomore Chadwick who scored 14 of her team-high 21 points in the second period. No other Tiger managed more than four points.

Kaitlin Gorden chipped in with a quality floor game off the bench, finishing with eight rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals. Chadwick had eight boards to go with her big scoring night.

In the end, the biggest problem for the home team was its inability to put the ball in the basket. The Tigers recorded just 12 field goals in 47 tries (27 percent).

"We need for our girls to look for their shots with confidence as 37 points isn’t going to be enough to win games," coach Chadwick said. "We also need to do a better job of executing on offense as whenever we did we were able to get good shots."

Farmington (2-13) returns to the court next Tuesday with a Missota Conference road game at New Prague, yet another state-rated Class 3A team (No. 6).

"The Missota Conference is loaded," Chadwick said. "It's probably not a great year to be playing mostly sophomores."
