Girls Hockey: Champion Tigers wrap up unbeaten Missota season with 7-2 win over Northfield

Krystal Baumann (bottom) 3 goals, 2 assists
Hannah Alexander 3 goals

Farmington wrapped a bow on its unbeaten (12-0) Missota Conference season with a 7-2 win over Northfield Friday night, Feb. 4, at Schmitz-Maki Arena.
The conference crown is the second in a row for the Tigers and marks only the second time a Farmington girls team has won all of its league games. The 2001-02 Tigers finished 14-0 on the way to their first-ever state tournament appearance.
"We played really well as a team," coach Jon Holmes said. "The first line did most of the scoring but our defensive corps stepped up by being aggressive and taking high quality shots from the point.
"We are definitely playing our best hockey going into the playoffs and I couldn't ask for anything more."
The regular season finale proved to be a fitting send-off for the high-scoring senior duo of Krystal Baumann and Hannah Alexander who each contributed a hat trick to the seven-goal out burst.
Baumann, who also recorded a pair of assists, ran her lofty regular season goal count to 46. Alexander finished the regular season with 25 with all three of her goals coming on the power play.
Haley Doll netted the other Farmington goal. Betsy Anderson assisted on three of the Farmington scores. Rachel Peroutky and Chloe Batta added a pair of assists for the winners.
Farmington scored three times in the opening period and added a fourth score in the second to take a 4-0 lead into the wild and woolly third period that featured five goals and seven penalties.
Junior goaltender Jessica Erchul picked up her 18th win of the season with a 24-save effort.
Holmes said he was impressed with the play of some of his younger players, notably Doll, Haleigh Zwart and Grace Gavin.
"Each game since our holiday tournament they have been getting better and better," he said, "and the last couple of games they have been bright spots. They are more confident with the puck, taking better shots and making and catching passes better than they did earlier in the season."
The victory ran Farmington's season record to 18-6 heading into this Sunday's Section 1AA seeding meeting. Holmes said Lakeville South will probably draw the No. 1 seed with his team and Lakeville North the top contenders for the second and third positions.
The teams own almost identical records but North (17-6) claimed a 4-2 win when the teams met head-to-head in November.
A two or three seed would give the Tigers an opening round bye and set up a quarterfinal match-up Friday night, Feb. 11, at Schmitz-Maki Arena against an opponent to be determined.
