New Prague came into Schmitz-Maki in January and walked all over an injury and illness-riddled Farmington team 7-1. Tuesday night, Feb 10, the Tigers got a little payback in a well-earned 5-1 win at the New Prague Community Center.
"We had everybody healthy this time," coach Keith Revels said. "We were using some new line combinations and we have been playing really well the last couple of games."
The visitors got off to a nice start with an early goal by Dan Handberg and a late score by Jake Sorenson to lead 2-0 after the opening period. Farmington goaltender Victor Simones had a stellar opening period, stopping 16 shots.
Sorenson and Blake Weinand added goals in the second to give the Tigers a commanding 4-0 cushion after two periods.
"We started to wear them down in the second period," Revels said. "We stayed disciplined."
New Prague, the second place team in the Missota Conference standings with a 9-3 record, finally got on the board midway through the final period on a power play goal before Grant Hauswirth's open-netter in the closing seconds closed the night's scoring.
"We didn't get greedy in the third period," Revels said. "We managed the clock well, created turnovers and dumped the puck deep countless times."
In addition to the four Farmington goal scorers, Tyler Grubb had a big night, adding four assists to his team-leading point total.
Victor Simones 33 saves
Simones finished the night with 33 saves in posting his ninth win of the season.
The victory bumped Farmington (5-7) into a fourth place tie with Chanhassen in the conference standings and raised its season mark to 11-12 with two games left on the regular season schedule, A Valentine's Day home date with Chanhassen and a road game next Thursday at Red Wing.
