Boys Track: A Relays Repeat

Dan Berg helped Tigers win high jump
The Tigers may not have the fastest or the strongest team in the Missota Conference but they proved again on Tuesday at Chaska they have the deepest, winning the Missota Conference Relays for the second consecutive year.

The Tigers finished the day with 201 points, well in front of runner-up Chanhassen who totaled 177. New Prague was third at 151, followed by Shakopee 142 , Chaska 112, Red Wing 98, Northfield 74 and Holy Angels 51.

"We have talented depth which works well for this particular meet and I am proud of these guys," coach Brian Helmstetter said. "This is an awesome TEAM meet."

The meet is conducted entirely in a relay format with even individual event winners based on the combined times/distances/heights of three athletes. In other words, depth wins.

Although depth is essential in this type of meet, Farmington proved it could also run at the front of the pack, winning five events: the 4x200, 4x800, 800 sprint medley, distance medley and high jump.

"Our running events dominated the meet," Helmstetter said. "I believe there were only one or two events where we were as low as third place. Otherwise we took first and second in each running event. That made up for some of the lower places in the field events."

Actually the Tigers didn't fare badly in the field events, either. Overall they tacked on five runner-up finishes, four thirds and three fourths to go along with their five blue ribbon performances. No Farmington entry finished lower than fourth in any event in the eight-team meet.

"We will have  a strong showing at the True Team meet, but there again, you need top performers with the team depth in each event," Helmstetter said.  "It will be awesome competition and we continue to improve each meet, so I am excited for us to compete.".
