Kyle Malin caps off his day in style
Former Tiger three-sport athlete Kyle Malin capped a day in his honor by hoisting the Amercian flag for the singing of the national anthem at the Minnesota Twins game with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Monday, June 27, at Target Field.
The flag raising in front of a supportive, sellout crowd brought an end to Kyle Malin Day, a tribute by the City of Lakeville to honor his heroic service in Afghanistan where he lost parts of both legs while on combat duty with the United States Army.
Malin, a staff sergeant who had previously served multiple combat deployments in Iraq, was also featured in major stories in both Twin Cities daily newspapers and on local television outlets.
Malin and his family will soon be returning to San Antonio, Texas, where he will continue to undergo physical rehabilitation for his injuries.

Girls Track: A season for the record books

The 2011 season was literally one for the books, the record books, that is. All in all, eight school records fell this season, including the best-ever finish at the state meet (fourth place).
"It was a great season," coach Tom Hart said. "The ladies really finished strong. The weather didn't cooperate very much but our kids competed very hard no matter what the conditions were. As a coach, that makes me very happy."
Twenty-seven athletes earned varsity letters for their season's efforts, including the team's six seniors: Devyn Alberts, Jordan Bridges, Nicole Clifton, Mary Cline, Erin Hickey and Kayla Long.
Underclassmen letters went to juniors Jessica Arey, Elizabeth Okikolu, Bailey Opsal, Alyssa Parco and Shelby Schillerstrom; sophomores Alex Frost, Courtney Johnston, Maria Kiminski, Kelsey Lindell, Nadia Lorencz and Kassy Seegert; freshmen Kathryn Beckett, Kelli Elmer, Izzie Ferm, Alysha Grebner, Kelly Kornmann, Hannah Seitzinger and Maddie Strid, eighth-graders Meghan Graham and Victoria Jacoby and seventh-grader Marciello Pacheco.
Hickey, Lorencz, Parco, Kiminski, Ferm and Elmer each won all-Missota Conference honors while Hickey received honorable mention.

At the state meet, Lorencz finished second in both the long jump and 100-meter hurdles while Parco took third in the 300-meter hurdles and the 4x400 relay team of Parco, Hickey, Ferm and Kiminski placed fourth.
Lorencz, who established new school marks in the long jump, triple jump and 100-meter hurdles, was named the team's Most Valuable Player and Ferm was tabbed as Most Improved. Hickey and Parco shared the the Tiger Award for dedication and work ethic.
In addition to Lorencz's three new individual school records. Parco set a new standard in the 300-meter hurdles and three relay records fell: the 4x400 (Parco, Hickey, Ferm and Kiminski); the sprint medley (Cline, Ferm, Hockey and Kiminski) and the shuttle hurdle (Parco, Arey, Lorenz and Beckett).
"Many of our new records are going to be very tough to break as we go forward," Hart said.
As for the future, Hart said the picture remains bright.
"We graduate some seniors who have contributed a lot of points through the year," he said. "They helped make us a recognized team each and every week and we will need to replace them...But the good thing is that we have a lot of returning athletes who gained valuable experience this year."

Ninth grade dominates Missota boys track

Much of the track season, members of the talented Tiger freshman class went head-to-head with upperclassmen in varsity meets. Predictably they found only modest success.
The Missota Conference ninth grade meet was a different story, however. The young Tigers used their superior talent and depth to dominate the league meet held in Shakopee.
Farmington won three of the four relay events and captured three individual titles to rack up a winning 213-point total. Chanhassen was a far-distant second with 96, followed by New Prague 76, Chaska 68, Holy Angels 64, Northfield 60, Red Wing 58 and Shakopee 47.
"Our numbers along with great individual effort allowed us to dominate," Tiger coach Brian Helmstetter said. "It reminded me of our teams from a few years ago as we had great performances all over the field.
"In a team setting, it's nice to have first place finishes, but it is even better to have two or three in the top eight to maximize points."
Two of the three Farmington individual wins came in the throws where CJ Wynings swept the shot put and discus. Reid Taubenheim cleared 11-0 to win the pole vault by a full two feet.
The Tigers also dominated the relays winning the 4x800 (Caleb Gochenour, Jared Wolt, Hunter Meyers, Eric Stoeckman); 4x200 (Mason Auge, Tanner Grubb, Wynings, Jack Erickson) and the 4x100 (Derek Klotter, Mac Bassett, Sean McHenry, Auge).
The 4x400 team of Stoeckman, Mason Gaylord, Erickson and Grubb took second as did Jake Rudeen in the 1600 and 3200-meter runs, Gaylord in the triple jump, Brandon King in the discus and Cullen Smith and Dan Berg (tie) in the high jump.
Third place finishers included Berg in the 110-meter hurdles; Auge in the 100-meter dash; Erickson in the 200-meter dash; Eric Schimmel in the shot put; Bassett in the long jump; and Smith in the triple jump.
Other Farmington point-scorers:

Boys Golf: Up and down and all around
Tigers sixth in Missota Conference
The only thing consistent about Farmington's play during the 2011 season was its inconsistency. In five Missota Conference meets coach Jon Holmes' squad finished fifth, sixth (twice), seventh and eighth, good enough for sixth place in the final eight-team league standings.
The Tigers played some of their best golf late, placing eighth in the Section 1AAA meet and advancing to the final round for the first time in many years.
"We were up and down all year," Holmes said. "The fact that we finished fifth in the last conference meet and made the second round of the sections were good accomplishments for us.
"We knew there would be some stiff competition for the top four spots with Chanhassen and Chaska joining the conference this year...Perhaps with some summer golf we can claw our way into the top four next year."
Holmes awarded varsity letters to nine players for their work during the 2011 campaign, including seniors Mike Dalhed, Cooper Loew, Matt Provost and Trevor Hockert.
Juniors Tommy May, Tony Lalani and Jacob Hanson, sophomore Kevin Olund and seventh grader Erik Holmstrom also earned letters this spring.
May was the low Tiger scorer for the season, finishing 12th in the individual conference rankings and receiving all-league honorable mention for his efforts.
Holmes said that his junior varsity team had a solid spring and that he sees many of that team's players key to the success of the 2012 squad.
"The winners will be the ones who get out and play this summer," he said. "Those players and some of the other young players who flourished toward the end of the season should really help us."
Holmes could not say enough about the importance of playing competitive summer golf.
"There is nothing wrong with playing 54 holes a day," he said, "and tournament golf helps you keep an edge. Every shot counts. That's something you can't get when you're just playing with your buddies."
The Tiger coach said he couldn't put the 2011 season in his rear view mirror without some parting words for his four seniors.
"Those guys are a class act," he said. "They all brought their own unique personality to the course. Hopefully they will continue to play as each of them has a bright golf future ahead of them.
"Cooper (Loew) was the best dressed of all time. He sported matching shoes, bright pants and cardigans no matter what the conditions."

Boys Track: Tigers blend age and youth
A look at the list of letterwinners tells the story of the 2011 FHS boys track season.
A strong 12-man senior class and a potentially even stronger group of 15 freshmen gave the Tigers a productive 2011 season and hopes for even better things to come in 2012 and beyond.
Farmington finished fifth in the eight-team Missota Conference and ranked 10th in a 15-team field at the Section 1AA Championships. The freshmen won their Missota Conference meet by a wide margin.
"Injuries hurt our senior class much of the season," coach Brian Helmstetter said, "so we had to depend on young athletes at some of our big meets and that made it difficult to compete for the top spots.
"That caused this to be a rebuilding year more so than we were hoping. But we gained a lot of varsity experience and that should hopefully benefit us as soon as next year."
The 12 senior letterwinners included Zach Wyatt, John Schimmel, Tyler Grubb, CJ Record, Charlie Wicks, Carl Elmer, Sam Hanson, Dillon Pariseau, Tyler Beckett, Matt Stephan, Drew Cayard and Cory Johnson.
Juniors Justin Hett, Joe Ouyang, Chad Retterath and Trevor Breezley earned monograms as did sophomores Tyler Lerbakken, Alex Chadwick, Connor Phu, Tommy Weigel, Adam Wallenta, Brad Dow, Alex Wilson and Tyler Petter.
The strong freshmen class included Mason Auge, Tanner Grubb, Jack Erickson, Dan Berg, Mac Bassett, Eric Stoeckman, Cullen Smith, Mason Gaylord, Jake Rudeen, Reid Taubenheim, Nick Ruark, Derek Klotter, CJ Wynings, Jake Lee and Sean McHenry.
Sprinter Tyler Grubb, high jumper Hanson and thrower Schimmel each earned all-Missota Conference honors while Wyatt received all-league honorable mention.
Hanson, who jumped a school record 6-7 early in the season, won both the conference and Section 1AA titles and finished in a 13th place tie in the event at the state meet.
Wyatt and Schimmel shared the team's Most Valuable Player Award while Lerbakken took home the Tiger Award for what Helmstetter termed "hard work and doing things right."
Helmstetter said he expects to see the Tigers fare better next spring but warned that will depend a lot on the improvement of the younger athletes.
"We'll only have four senior lettermen back," he said, "so we'll again have to depend on younger faces to get us back competing for championships.
"We will be working hard over the summer with weight lifting and speed work. Our middle school numbers were as high as ever so that should also give us a good boost of young talent."
Season-Best Performances:
4x800 relay: Eric Stoeckman, Jared Wolt, Trevor Breezley, Tyler Lerbakken, 8:51
110-meter hurdles: Dan Berg, 17.2
100-meter dash: Tyler Grubb, 11.54
800-meter run: Lerbakken, 2:05

400-meter dash: Tyler Grubb, 51.64
300-meter hurdles: Tyler Beckett, 42.84
4x100 relay: Jack Erickson, Charlie Wicks, Alex Chadwick, Mason Auge, 45.94

Softball: A step forward
Ashley Betzold

The young and mostly inexperienced Tigers took a step forward in 2011, finishing 11-12 overall and in a fourth place tie in the final Missota Conference standings with a 7-7 record. Coach Rob Laden's squad also advanced to the Section 1AAA final four where it lost to state champion Hastings and Rochester Mayo.
Laden said that all things considered, his team put together a successful 2011 campaign.
"Our conference got tougher this year with the addition of Chaska and Chanhassen," Laden said. "We also played a tougher non-conference schedule. When you combine that with being a young team, it made for a tough road.
"The weather didn't help either. We played half of our season (12 games) in 12 days and we only had six outdoor practices all season."
Laden said that ironically one of the season's biggest highlights came in a game his team lost.
"In the section semifinals Hastings beat us 5-0," he said. "They went on to win the state championship. They beat a lot of teams by a lot more than they beat us....Although we had a slow start, we played better as the season progressed."
If there were disappointment in the 2011 season, Laden said it came in the lack of summer play by his team's players.
"We need more of our players to play summer ball and train to become better," he said. "There is only so much we can do in three weeks in the gym."
Thirteen Tigers received varsity letters this spring, only three of them seniors--Alyssa Hagen, Dani Muelken and Paige Lindrud.
Other letterwinners included juniors Allie Rice, Erin Wurst, Taylor Hakaana and Mackenzie Beers; sophomores Ashley Betzold, Toni Hunsinger, Aleah Williamson and Erin Wurst; freshman Alyssa Kalmes and eighth-grader Taylor Yousse.
Betzold hit a team-leading .373 and pitched in every game, compiling an earned run average of 2.99. She and battery mate Muelken (.284 batting average) earned spots on the all-Missota Conference team. Yousse (.283) and Williamson (.272) each received honorable mention.
Laden said that with the large number of veterans returning next spring, 2012 should bring more improvement but he cautioned that it won't come automatically.
"We just can't show up a year older," he said. "We have to put the time into training to reach higher goals as a team."
To that end, the second year coach is stressing off-season work for this players, including playing summer ball; participating in fall leagues and dome ball; attending open gym sessions and taking part in weight training programs.

Girls Lacrosse: A frustrating yet rewarding season
At first glance the Tigers 1-10 season looks like a small step backwards from last year's inaugural two-win season.
Upon closer scrutiny, however, the 2011 season was one of giant strides for coach Dan Pickens' team. The Tigers lost three one-goal games and dropped two more in overtime.
"We had a great season even though our record doesn't reflect it," Pickens said. "We were much more competitive this year and improved our goal differential form minus-63 to minus-21.
"We will continue to work through the off-season and we return almost the entire team next year."
Pickens hopes for the future were also buoyed by the play of the Tiger junior varsity team that posted a 4-5-2 season record.
All 24 of the varsity letterwinners this spring were underclassmen, including eight juniors: Haley Bradshaw, Jess Erchul, Ashley Gandrud, Kelli Harstad, Tia Jacoby, Adrienne Jolicoeur, Ally Midboe and Kevra Wolfe.
Other letterwinners included sophomores Brittany Olson and Delaney Wright; freshmen Lindsay Benson, Haley Doll, Kylee Glen, Kaeli Halverson, Shaye Jenrich, Delaney Johnson, Maddie Kohlbeck, Kaitlin LaCroix, Breanna Raske, Brooke Raske and Rachael Welzin; eighth-graders Becky Genzler and Shelby Klotz and seventh-grader Brooke Genzler.
Midboe (31 points), Bradshaw (30) and Jolicoeur (27) accounted for more than half of the Tiger offense this spring with Bradshaw leading in goals with 25 and Jolicoeur in assists with 12. Erchul finished with 15 points, Brooke Genzler 12 and Welzin 10.
Kohlbeck started in goal the first the first three games before suffering a season-ending injury and had a 56.0 save percentage and 13.2 goals against average. Lacroix went 1-6 with a 9.6 goals against average and a 44 percent save average. Welzin also logged a game in goal for the Tigers.
"Our sport will be an official Missota Conference sport next year," Pickens said, "and I think we'll have a shot at the first title. I'm very excited about our future."
Boys Lacrosse: Injuries plague second season

The good news for the Tigers this spring was they posted the program's first-ever varsity win at Owatonna; the bad news was that injury after injury to key players kept them from any more victories.
"We had a myriad of injuries that hamstrung us all year," coach Paul Sorenson said. "Tyler Klotz, our defensive captain missed 11 of 13 games and Alex Rojesky, a starting midfielder missed 12. We piece-mealed lineups together all year. I'm very proud of how our players stepped up."
Soresnon handed out 24 varsity letters to players for their efforts during the 2011 season, including 10 seniors: Ian Eich, Blair Berg, Justin Rees, Kyle Jensen, Luke Brevik, Quinn Malcolm, Evan Workman, John Scoles, Tyler Tutewohl-Klotz and Jake Lee.
Underclassmen monogram winners included juniors Mitch Collier, Trevor Howard, Matt Ackerman, Jake Mendala, Marques Words and Charlie Weierke; sophomores Joey Todd,, Jake Bauman, Matt Heinzerling-Wiese and Nathan Brunelle and freshmen Cory Rudrud, Kevin Clifton, Dan Block and Michael Thompson. Managers Christian Bell and Keegan Marquardt also won varsity letters.
Ackerman won the Team Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award while Collier and Weierke were named offensive and defensive MVP's respectively. Rees took home the "Team Player" award and Block was named Rookie of the Year.
Soresnon also recognized the strong play of the junior varsity team that won five of 12 contests.
"They played with intensity and passion and as a team all season," he said.
With the team's top five scorers in Collier, Ackerman, Howard, Baumnan and Words and starting goalie Weierke all slated to return next spring, Soresnon said the future of his program looks solid.
"The building blocks are in place and the new season started the minute after our section loss," he said. "Many camps, clinics and weight/cardio programs have been implemented and our players have been encouraged to participate."

Baseball: Slow start hurts Tigers
Like the spring weather the Tigers were slow out of the gate and they never could quite recover in a season that ended with an overall record of 4-17 and a seventh place finish (3-11) in the Missota Conference.
"Hopefully the experience we gained this year will lead to more success in 2012," coach Mike Winters said. "We got off to a slow start (1-8) this year and then mental errors and four one-run losses hurt us the rest of the way."
Nineteen Tigers received varsity letters at the team's post-season banquet: Sebren Baer, Jake Baskerville, Steven Barber, Quinn Eden, Dayne Eich, Jonathan Ellis, Nathan Graham, Drew Hegseth, Tommy Korbein, Cole Luskey, Spencer Merle, Andy Morris, Nick Newman, Zak Payne, Ryan Schoening, Andy Sharratt, John Stibal, Ty Vincent and Zach Wallace.
Participation certificates went to 13 others, including Johnny Dittman, Jared Lipinski, Zach Huber, Marty Rivera, Simon Lindstrom, Jordan Decrook, Michael Letourneau, Turner Olson, Athen Ashton, Tyler Knutson, Bret Hoffman, Kayle Meyer and Jordan Lugowski.
Baskerville, who led the team in hitting with a .358 batting average, landed a berth on the all-Missota Conference team while Graham and Payne each received all-league honorable mention.
Baskerville won the team's batting award while Ellis took home the Top Gun Award for being the top pitcher. Korbein won defensive honors and Baer was tabbed as the team's most improved player.
"Statistically we improved throughout the season," Winters said, "and the players stayed positive considering all of the emotional ups and down we had."
The veteran Tiger coach added that the future looks brighter for the program with a large number of experienced players as well as a promising crop of newcomers slated to return next spring.
"We'll be offering skill camps this summer and have some new things for this winter that should help us prepare for the 2012 season."

Girls Golf: Tigers creep up Missota ladder
Freshman Brianna Swenson
Low scoring average for 2011 season
The young Tigers took baby steps up the Missota Conference and Section 1AAA ladders in 2011, finishing seventh out of eight schools in the league and 10th in the 12-team section.
"We are very young but we're getting better," coach Rob Carpentier said. "As a team we were generally 20-30 shots a meet lower than last year and we had two players advance to the final round at the section tournament."
Carpentier and assistant coach Shane Wyandt awarded nine varsity letters to players on this year's squad, including seniors Terra Klima and Chelsea Runyon; junior Megan Elliott; sophomores Mia Johnston, Alexis Preese, Alexis House and Kayla Collins and freshmen Brianna Swenson and Annie Grengs.
Klima, the team captain and a section final round qualifier, earned the Most Valuable Player award while Elliott was tabbed as the "most improved" player. Collins won Rookie of the Year honors.
Carpentier also had some words of praise for sophomores Kaylee Seurer and Alexis Bailey.
"Both of them made every practice and worked hard to improve," he said. "They are close to being varsity level golfers."
The Tiger coach added that the only disappointments in the season just completed came when the team finished just behind conference rival Shakopee multiple times.
"It was one stroke in one tournament," he said. "It would have been nice to beat them at least once."
Carpentier said that with just one varsity regular lost to graduation, next year should see continued improvement.
"The girls need to get out and play MANY rounds over the summer," he said, "and some lessons on specific parts of their games, such as putting and chipping, would also help."
Carpentier also took time to laud the efforts of Klima and Runyon, his departing seniors.
"They did everything I asked and then some," he said. "Terra provided good vocal and active leadership while Chelsea was consistently a positive influence on her teammates."

21 Tigers earn Missota spring honors
Thirteen FHS athletes, nine of them from the boys and girls track teams, received all-Missota Conference honors this spring; eight more earned all-league honorable mention.
The Tiger honorees represented six of the nine spring sports. Because only three league schools sponsor boys and girls lacrosse programs, all-conference teams were not selected.
Farmington all-conference winners:
Girls track: Erin Hickey, Nadia Lorencz, Alyssa Parco, Maria Kiminski, Izzie Ferm and Kelli Elmer
Boys Track: Sam Hanson, Tyler Grubb and John Schimmel
Softball: Ashley Betzold and Dani Muelken
Baseball: Jake Baskerville
Boys tennis: Ben Cline
Honorable Mention:
Baseball, Zak Payne and Nathan Graham; Softball, Aleah Williamson and Alyssa Hagen; Boys golf, Tommy May; Boys tennis, Blake Olmscheid; Girls track, Erin Hickey and Boys track, Zach Wyatt.

Boys Tennis: Serving up some promise
Ben Cline
MVP, Player of the Year and all-Missota Conference
The Tigers managed but one dual meet victory this spring but veteran coach Jack Olwell said his young team took a step in the right direction over the course of the 2011 season.
"We had a good year," he said, "one in which most players showed great improvement. They demonstrated the competitive fire needed to succeed and they will be playing a lot this summer."
Olwell and his staff awarded varsity letters to 13 players at the team's post-season banquet, including senior Peter Folz; juniors Ben Cline, Blake Olmscheid, Tyler Olson and Jeff Zakoksi; sophomores Christopher Kirchmann, Austin Rau and Colton Sanders and freshmen Trent Kortemnbusch, Ivan Rodriguez, Austin Tremel, Brian Waldbillig and Jon Zakoski.
Olwell also noted the improved play of several non-letterwinners, especially that of Josh Botawright.
Cline, who manned the No. 1 singles position, won the team's Most Valuable Player and Player of the Year awards and also landed a spot on the all-Missota Conference squad.
Olmacheid received all-conference honorable mention and also won the Tiger Award for leadership and spirit. Walbillig took home Rookie of the Year honors.
" I thought we would have won a few more matches," Olwell said. "Had we been at full strength all year we would have. But we played competitively and have built a strong base for the future."
With only Folz lost to graduation, the Tiger coach said the future looks bright for his program.
"We should be stronger in every aspect next year," he said. "Greater numbers, more depth and improved talent. I'm looking forward to seeing our development."
Olwell said that Folz and Seth Roberts, who left the team during the season with an injury, will definitely be missed.
"It's hard to imagine the team without those two," he said. "They will be impossible to replace...They are both excellent players and I hope their love for the game continues to grow."

Alumni Tracker: Kyle Malin to raise flag at Twins game
Former Tiger athlete Kyle Malin who lost part of both legs while serving in the United States Army in Afghanistan has been selected to raise the flag during the singing of the national anthem at the Minnesota Twins game vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers, Monday, June 27, at Tiger Field.
Ex-Tiger Paul Harrington coached his Totino Grace girls softball team to sixth place at last weekend's Class 3A state softball tournament in Mankato. Totino won the North Suburban Conference championship and finished the regular season with a perfect 20-0 record before going 1-2 in the state tourney.
Two other former FHS athletes coached Minnesota high school teams this spring. 1994 female Athlete of the Year Amber Hegland's Wayzata nine finished 14-6 and lost in the section finals to Hopkins. Randy Schmitz's Lakeville North team went 7-11-1 and ranked eighth in the South Suburban Conference.
Jamie Steffen, a state tournament wrestler in his high school days at FHS, was the pole vault coach for the Apple Valley boys and girls track teams this spring. One of his girl vaulters finished among the top eight at last weekend's state meet.
Jason Berg, who has had separate stints as coach of the Tiger boys and girls basketball teams, is leaving the district to take an elementary school principal job in the Owatonna Public Schools. Berg, who led the Tiger girls to two Section 1 championships games the past three years, plans to remain living in Farmington.
2007 FHS male Athlete of the Year Trey Davis finished sixth in the discus and seventh in the shot put for the University of Minnesota at the Big Ten Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Iowa City...Younger brother Trevor Davis took fourth in the javelin throw at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Championships for Hamline University.
Ex-Tiger track standout Michael Bendix placed eighth in the high jump for Minnesota State-Moorhead to help the Dragons to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference title...At the same meet, former Tigers Mallory Skoff and Jackie Beckett competed for Minnesota State, Mankato and Minnesota-Duluth respectively. Skoff ranked 16th in the discus throw and Beckett placed 17th in the 800-meter run.
Former Tiger Mallory Betzold made the all-MIAC women's softball team for the second time in three seasons. The St. Mary's University senior hit .368 and complied an 11-6 pitching record for the Cardinals this spring. Earlier Betzold had been named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association all-Midwest Region third team.
Former Tiger assistant baseball, softball and boys hockey coach Terry Salo passed away last week following a long illness.
Boys Track: Hanson 13th in state high jump
Senior high jumper Sam Hanson closed the books on his high school track career with an appearance at the 2011 Class AA State Track and Field Championships held June 10-11 at Hamline University.
Hanson, who set a school record of 6-7 early in the season and was the reigning Missota Conference and Section 1AA champion coming into the meet, cleared 6-2 at state, good enough for a 13th place finish.
"Getting to state was Sam's goal and it was achieved," coach Brian Helmstetter said. "He looked really good the first couple of jumps and cleared 6-2 easily. He was over the bar at 6-4 on his first two attempts but hit his foot on the way down both times."

Farmington didn't have the biggest contingent of athletes at the 2011 state girls track and field meet but it certainly had one of the most productive.
Five Tigers combined to qualify for state in four events and when all was said and done, coach Tom Hart's team ranked fourth among 67 teams scoring points at the two-day event held June 10-11 at Hamline University.
Hopkins ran away with the team title with 84 points. Alexandria ranked second at 48, followed by Apple Valley 35 and Farmington 34. The fourth place finish was the best ever by a Tiger track team at the state meet.
"We had a very good meet," Hart said, "and I couldn't be prouder of my team."
Sophomore Nadia Lorencz posted a pair of runner-up finishes to lead the Farmington effort. Friday she leaped 17-10 in the long jump, three and three-fourths inches back of the winner.
Saturday morning Lorencz shaved .02 of a second off her school record time in finishing second in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.26.
"Nadia ran her best race of the season and was leading after the first three or four hurdles," Hart said.
Alyssa Parco

Junior Alyssa Parco made her third straight state meet appearance a memorable one, placing third in the 300-meter hurdles in a school-record time of 44.81 seconds. Parco was seventh in the same race at state last spring.
"Like Nadia, Alyssa was in front through five of the first eight hurdles," Hart said.

Parco left her fingerprints on another school-record-setting performance in the 4x400 meter relay, joining freshman Izzie Ferm, senior Erin Hickey and sophomore Maria Kiminski to take fourth place in a high-powered field.
The fleet foursome dropped five seconds from its previous best time to finish in 3:54.51. The winning Hopkins team ran 3:51.26 to establish an all-time state record.
"To know we were within three seconds of an all-time state record is incredible," Hart said. "My ladies were amazing. It was a great ending to a pretty good season."

"Nadia ran her best race of the season and was leading after the first three or four hurdles," Hart said.

Magalis named all-American diver
Tyler Magalis, all-American
Tigers senior Tyler Magakis has added another line to his already impressive diving credentials.
Magalis, the 2011 Class AA state one-meter board champion, was recently named an all-American by the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association (NISCA).
FHS diving coach Gregg Rappe explained that receiving the NISCA award is quite an accomplishment.
"It is performance-based and judged just like a meet," he said. "There were 180 nominating tapes submitted and Tyler was ranked 39th. The top 100 receive all-American status.
This is a great honor for Tyler. He worked hard and achieved the goals he set early in the year. One by one, he would learn a life lesson by changing his thinking to become a better-performing athlete."
Magalis, who plans to continue his diving career at St. Cloud State University next year, is the third Tiger diver to receive all-American honors. RJ Rappe, the 2005 Class A one-meter state champ, received the distinction twice, finishing 11th and 26th and Matt Mahowald ranked 48th after his senior season.

Boys Golf: Tigers take 8th in section
Tony Lalani shot a team-low 82 in final round
Farmington started the final round of the Section 1AAA championships in eighth place and that's exactly where the Tigers finished.
The final 18-hole round was played in blistering heat Monday at Bellwood Oaks Golf Club in Hastings and coach Jon Holmes said the conditions had a major effect on his squad.
"It was a scorcher," Holmes said. "Two of the boys suffered heat exhaustion and one needed to be taken off the course early to cool down.
"The conditions were ripe for scoring but you just had to get by the mental block that it was too hot for golf. Those who were able to block it out and just rolled with it shot pretty well."
Lakeville North successfully defended its section title, finishing with a 36-hole total of 614 strokes. Lakeville South placed second at 629, followed by Rochester Century 636, Owatonna 641, Winona 652, Rochester Mayo 661, Rochester John Marshall 671, Farmington 679.
Tony Lalani had the lowest final round for the Tigers at 82, cutting 16 strokes off his opening round 98 for a 180 total. Tommy May finished the tourney at a team-low 166 (83-83).
Cooper Loew checked in at 168 (81-87); Matt Provost 172 (84-88) and Jacob Hanson 170 (89-90). Erik Homlstrom shot 89 for the opening round but had to withdraw because of the heat in the second.

Girls Golf: Season ends at section
Senior captain Terra Klima
The Tiger golf season faded to black at the final round of the Section 1AAA Championships played Monday, June 6, at Cannon Golf Club.
Terra Klima and Brianna Swenson qualified for Monday's final round as individuals but did not advance to the state tournament.
Klima matched her opening day round of 103 to finish at 206 for the two-day meet. Swenson shot 112 to finish at 212.
"The conditions weren't ideal because of the heat," Tiger coach Rob Carpentier said. "Many of the scores were elevated but both of our girls would have needed to shoot around 90 to have a chance to advance."
Team captain Klima will graduate this spring. Freshman Swenson has three years of varsity experience remaining.
"Bri's experience at the section should certainly help her," Carpentier said.

Girls Track: Lorencz, Parco and 4x400 relay team move on to state
State qualifiers Alysa Parco (top) and Nadia Lorencz

Tiger coach Tom Hart said if he could change anything he would like a re-do of a hand-off in the 4x200 relay and add an inch to Nadia Lorencz's triple jump distance but all in all, he was impressed with his team's performance at the Section 1AA Championships held Saturday at Lakeville South.
"There are always things you can look back on and think you should have done this or that differently," Hart said, "but the girls had a good day over all.
"In addition to the state qualifiers we had some personal bests and relay teams get to the podium even though they didn't run in the fast heat. The girls gave their best and as a coach, that's all you can ask."
Farmington placed fifth in the 14-team meet and qualified athletes for the state meet in four events: Lorencz in the long jump and 100-meter hurdles; Alyssa Parco in the 300-meter hurdles and the 4x400 relay team of Parco, Erin Hickey, Izzie Ferm and Maria Kiminski.
Lakeville North defeated crosstown rival Lakeville South 140-105 to win the team championship. Rochester Mayo finished third with 93 points, followed by Rochester Century 74.5, Farmington 62, Northfield 51, Rosemount 50.5, Faribault 45, Albert Lea 21, Owatonna 17, Red Wing 16, Winona 14, Austin 12, Rochester John Marshall 1.
Lorencz set a new section and school record in the long jump with a leap of 18-8 and placed second in the hurdles in 15.45 to qualify for two events at this weekend's Class AA state championships in St. Paul. She barely missed making the cut in a third event, finishing third in the triple jump, an inch short of the state qualifying standard with a 35-10 effort.
Parco won her third consecutive trip to state by winning the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 45.90. She placed seventh in the event at the 2010 state meet.

The 4x400 team shaved almost a second off its own recently set school record to finish second in 3:59.37 and beat the state qualifying standard of 4:01.09.
The same four runners led the 4x200 relay race headed into the last leg when a mishandled exchange resulted in a third place finish.
Hickey added to her success in the relays with a fifth place finish in the triple jump and a sixth place effort in the long jump.
Ferm also added points in an individual event with a fifth place finish in the 400-meter dash.
The 4x100 relay squad of Mary Cline, Jessica Arey. Kelli Elmer and Kelly Kornmann took seventh and the 4x800 team of Alex Frost, Maddie Strid, Meghan Graham and Hannah Seitzinger ranked eighth.

Boys Track: Hanson high jump champ; Tigers 10th in section
Sam Hanson
Section 1AA high jump champion
Sam Hanson has had a book end type of season. Early on, the senior high jumper cleared 6-7 to set a new school record. Then injury reared its ugly head and caused his numbers to go down and his ability to even compete diminish.
But two weeks ago, Hanson started to return to form by winning the Missota Conference title. Saturday he made it two in a row by winning the Section 1AA crown and a trip to the state meet with a leap of 6-4.
Hanson's 10 points accounted for the lion's share of his team's total of 26 as the Tigers finished 10th in a 15-team field at the meet held at Lakeville South.
Rosemount ran away with the team title with 178 points. Owatonna finished a disatnt second at 83, followed by Faribault 79, Rochester Mayo 68, Lakeville South 65, Red Wing 42, Lakeville North 41, Rochester Century 34.5, Albert Lea 27, Farmington 26, Winona 21, Northfield 18, Rochester John Marshall 12, Hastings 4.5, Austin 2
"We had a great section when looking at personal achievements," coach Brian Helmstetter said. "I was happy with how many of our guys made the finals and earned personal bests.
"For our younger guys competing this was great experience. They saw they could compete and what a few years of hard work will get them if they stay dedicated year round."
Tyler Grubb scored points in two events in his final meet for the Tigers, placing fifth in the 200-meter dash and seventh in the 100-meter dash.
"Tyler had a great career for us," Helmstetter said, "even though injuries plagued him this season."
Senior thrower John Schimmel threw the shot a career-best 51-8.25 to place seventh and Zach Wyatt finished in a three-way tie for seventh in the high jump.
"Jon would have won a couple of other AA sections in the state with that throw," Helmstetter said of Schimmel's effort.
Farmington netted points in three relays with the 4x400 team of Wyatt, Tyler Lerbkaken, Tanner Grubb and Tyler Grubb scoring a fifth place finish.
The 4x100 quartet of Jack Erickson, Charlie Wicks, Alex Chadwick and Mason Auge took eighth as did the the 4x200 foursome of Tommy Weigel, Auge, Erickson and Wicks.
Hanson will compete at this weekend's Class AA State Championships at Hamline University in St. Paul.

Section 1 final round qualifiers
Brianna Swenson and Terra Klima advanced to the finals of the Section 1AAA tournament as individuals as the Tigers finished 10th in a 12-team field in the opening round played Thursday, June 2, at Cannon Golf Club in Cannon Falls.
Owatonna led Northfield 357-359 at the top of the standings at the end of the first round. Lakeville South ranked third at 367, followed by Lakeville North 369, Rochester Mayo 380, Rochester John Marshall 395, Winona 403, Albert Lea 410, Rochester Century 412, Farmington 429 and Austin 430 and Faribault 464.
"As a team we shaved 31 strokes off our score from last year on the same course," Tiger coach Rob Carpentier said. "I am very proud of the girls."
Swenson finished at an even 100 on the windy day in Cannon Falls with Klima three shots back at 103.
"Bri has a realistic, albeit an outside, shot at the state meet," Carpentier said.
Annie Grengs came in third for the Tigers at 114, followed by Megan Elliot and Mia Johnston 116 and Alexi House 127.
The final 18-hole round will be played Monday, June 6, back at the Cannon Golf Club.

Boys Golf: Tigers advance to Round Two
For the first time in many years the Tigers will play in the final round of the Section 1AA team tournament.
Farmington finished eighth among 12 schools in the opening round played at windy Bellwood Oaks Golf Club in Hastings on Thursday to move on to next Monday's finals at the same course.
Defending champion Lakeville North led at the halfway point with 307 strokes. Lakeville South ranked second at 321, followed by Owatonna 322, Winona 323, Rochester Century 324, Rochester Mayo 330, Rochester John Marshall 335, Farmington 337, Austin 344, Faribault 344, Albert Lea 347 and Northfield 350. The first eight teams moved on to the final round
"I can't recall the last time our entire team qualified for the second day of sections," Tiger coach Jon Holmes said. "There were lots of large numbers on specific holes and lots of great players that may have seen their dream for state blow away in the 45 mph wind...As it turned out, it came down to the last grouping and we qualified comfortably and only missed the next two spots by a couple strokes."
The wind inflated the final scores but three Tigers shot well enough that they would have qualified for the finals as individuals had the team not made the cut.
Cooper Loew 81 topped the Tiger leader board with a round of 81, two shots better than regular-season leader Tommy May and three lower than Matt Provost. Erik Holmstrom and Jacob Hanson each finished at 89 and Tony Lalani carded 98.

Elmer, Alberts 2011 Athletes of the Year
(Top to Bottom)
Carl Elmer-Male Athlete of the Year
Devyn Alberts-Female Athlete of the Year
Sebren Baer-Oscar Lubke Award
Katie Habeck-Leslie Lindell Award
Terra Klima-Tom Rolloff Award
Brian Huls-Tom Rolloff Award
Aaron Dahl-AAA Award
Jordan Bridges-AAA Award
Carl Elmer and Devyn Alberts have been named the 2011 Farmington High School male and female athletes of the year. The selections were announced at the senior awards banquet held Wednesday night at the high school.
Elmer has been a three-sport athlete for the Tigers, excelling in wrestling, cross country and track. He finished his high school wrestling career with more than 100 victories and ranked fifth in the 140 lbs. weight class at the 2011 Class 3A State Championships held in March. He plans to continue his mat career next year at St. Olaf College in Northfield.
Alberts, who earlier this spring received the school's Athena Award, played soccer and ran track for the Tigers but soccer was her signature sport. She was a five-year starter for the Tigers and four times was named the team's Most Outstanding Player. After her senior season she made both the All-Metro and All-State teams. Alberts will play NCAA Division I soccer next year for the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.
Katie Habeck won the Leslie Lindell Award named for the long-time FHS principal and Sebren Baer was the recipient of the Oscar Lubke Award given in memory of the renowned Tiger coach of the 1930's and 40's.
Habeck was an outstanding hitter for the Tigers and ended her career with more than 1000 kills. In her junior season she helped Farmington to it first-ever appearance in the state tournament. Habeck will play volleyball next fall for defending NCAA Division II national champion Concordia University-St. Paul.
Baer has been a versatile three-sport athlete for the Tigers, starting in football, basketball and baseball and earning all-Missota Conference honorable mention in basketball. He plans to attend Winona State University.
Brian Huls and Terra Klima received the Tom Rolloff Awards presented in the name of the former FHS principal.
