Farmington scored three second period goals and rolled over Shakopee, 5-1, Friday night in Shakopee.
The Tigers (4-4-1) ended a two-game losing streak with the win while outshooting the Sabers (2-10-0) 46-28.
“We continue to play better in our defensive zone, limiting quality opportunities,” head coach Keith Revels said. “We are working hard, playing physical and finishing around the net.”
Jason Thomas opened the scoring with his first varsity goal at 11:53 of the first period. Blake Weinand would add the game winner, shorthanded, at 6:00 of the second period. Shakopee cut the lead in half nearly a minute and a half later, but power play goals from Ryan Shoening and Kevin Olund and an even strength tally from Jake Eldred would end any Saber comeback. Senior goaltender Victor Simones stopped 27 shots.
“Shakopee is a pretty young team,” Revels said. “One of few that graduated more than we did last year and we took it to them pretty good.”
Farmington finished 2-for-6 on the power play while Shakopee was scoreless in three opportunities.
The Tigers will open 2012 when they entertain the Academy of Holy Angels at Schmitz-Maki Arena tonight at 7:15 p.m.
