Alumni Tracker: Simon coaching at UST


While new University of Minnesota football coach Jerry Kill had his team battling Southern Cal to the wire in Los Angeles, one of his former players, 2005 FHS male Athlete of the Year Matt Simon, was making his collegiate coaching debut in St. Paul.
Simon, who played for Kill his senior season at Northern Illinois, is the tight ends coach for the University of St. Thomas which opened its 2011 season with a 20-7 win over St. Norbert. The Tommies are rated among the top 10 NCAA Division III teams in the nation.
FHS grad Cody Eich, who has already played on two national NCAA Division II championship teams for Minnesota-Duluth, started his senior season off on a positive note, finishing with nine tackles in the top-rated Bulldogs 20-12 victory over top-ten ranked Augustana.
2009 FHS male Athlete of the Year Derek Waldbillig gained 16 yards on three carries and scored a touchdown for Bethel in its 55-3 season-opening romp over Simpson...Another former Tiger, Bubba Friedlund, started at left tackle for the Royals.
Former Tiger Drew Schaeppi was credited with three assists and half a tackle for a loss in Minnesota State, Mankato's 31-24 loss to Northern Michigan...Dave Galler, who played two years at the North Dakota School of Science is back on the football field as a linebacker for Minnesota State, Moorhead, a 27-17 winner over Robert Morris in its opener.
Ex-FHS athletes Mike Doherty and Chad Donnelly are both playing football at Hamline University which opens its 2011 campaign next week against Pacific Lutheran...
CJ Record who gained more than 1000 yards for the Tigers last fall has been switched to strong safety his freshman season at Southwest State University....201o all-Missota Conference performer Cory Johnson is a freshman offensive lineman at St. John's University in Collegeville.
2011 FHS female Athlete of the Year Devyn Alberts has played in all six games for the Wisconsin-Green Bay women's soccer team this fall...Former teammate Laine Trowbridge is a midfielder/defender for Concordia-St. Paul.
Katie Habeck, who was a fixture in the Tiger volleyball lineup for four years and an all-state performer last fall, is playing regularly for four-time defending NCAA Division II champion Concordia-St. Paul. Through four matches, Habeck has totaled 30 kills and a team-high 13 blocks.
2009 FHS female Athlete of the Year Kirstee Rotty has 21 digs in four games for the St. Olaf College women's volleyball team which is ranked 16th in the NCAA Division III poll...Danielle Dombeck is a sophomore defensive specialist for North Dakota State University.
