Gymnastics: Wharton on the beam at State

Kylie Wharton
Tiger sophomore Kylie Wharton wrote a memorable ending to her 2012-13 season story with a seventh place finish on the balance beam at the 2013 Class AA state gymnastics meet Saturday night at the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion.

Wharton, who was sidelined by injury most of the first half of the season, put up a a 9.350 score on the beam in Saturday's state finals.

"Kylie was more then ready for this meet," Bauman said. "She worked very hard on preparing herself physically and mentally.

"Kylie's poise and confidence was a delight to watch as she managed to stay on the beam for her whole routine. What an exciting accomplishment and experience for her."

Senior Kiana Lord was the other Farmington entrant as state. She placed 22nd among 32 performers in floor exercise with a score of 9.250 in her second appearance at the state meet. Lord ranked sixth in vault and 19th in all-around in 2010.

"I told Kiana to go out there and have fun and hit her landings," Farmington coach Lynn Buamn said. "She did that and more.

"She had an amazing floor routine and she did have fun. That's all you can ask for. It was wonderful to have Kiana back at state."

Wharton and Lord weren't the only Tigers to reap state honors. The team attended the pre-tournament banquet earlier in the week to receive its Section 2AA Academic Championship award.

Farmington won the award by compiling a composite team grade-point-average of 3.91 (on a 4.00 scale).
