Boys Tennis: Missed opportunties and equipment malfunctions

Jeff Zakoski (top) and Brian Waldbillig
7-6(5), 6-2 winners at No. 2 doubles

Tiger coach Jack Olwell sang a familiar refrain after his team's 5-2 non-conference loss to Minnehaha Academy Monday, May 2, in Minneapolis.
"Once again we had a chance to win the meet," Olwell said. "We held set point at first doubles and the lead at first and second singles but we didn't convert."
Olwell added that even though Ben Cline and Blake Olmscheid both lost at the top two singles positions, things could have turned out differently if not for some major equipment malfunctions.
Both broke strings and had to play with unfamiliar, not to mention inferior and outdated racquets.
"It would have been comical had it happened to anyone but us," Olwell said.
The Tiger points came at third singles and second doubles.
Seth Roberts won a tough, three-set match 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 3 singles position while the No. 2 doubles tandem of Jeff Zakoski and Brian Waldbillig won in straight sets 6-7 (5), 6-2.
"Seth's match is the best I have seen him play," Olwell said. "He showed a more relaxed, patient approach to the game and produced longer rallies that tested both players abilities."
The Tiger coach was equally impressed with the Zakoski/Waldbilling duo that won for the second straight outing.
"They are on a tear," he said. "The more they play together, the better they get."
