Last fall a young Tiger team finished the season with a 5-10 record but after Tuesday afternoon's 5-2 win at Holy Angels those numbers have turned upside down. The Missota Conference victory over the Stars brought the Farmington win total to 10 (against four losses) and a smile to coach Jack Olwell's face.
"It''s a world gone mad," the veteran coach quipped. "We haven't been over 10 win in a decade and we're hoping to add another one tomorrow."
Tuesday's win wasn't quite as easy as the final score appeared. For openers, Callie Olmscheid, who owns the best singles record this season, left school early due to illness. Then once the match began, the Tigers fell behind at first singles, second singles and first doubles.
"Fortunately we came back to win at all three of those," Olwell said. "They were the cardiac kids today.
Three of the Farmington points came in singles play with Megan Stivers, Ryan Jara and Jessie Novotny all victorious.
The 15-2 first doubles team of Beth and Lindsey Fairchild had a hiccup or two in the first set before scoring a 6-4, 6-1 win. The third doubles team of Sam Gallagher and Hannah Toomey also won in straight sets.
Wednesday the Tigers will be looking to make it 11 wins when they Shakopee at the Boeckman Middle School courts.
