Coach Jack Olwell addresses his team on the first day of practice
The season that began with raised expectations on August 15 came to an abrupt halt Tuesday, Oct. 4, in a one-sided 7-0 loss at Rochester Century in the opening round of the Section 1AA team tournament
The Panthers, the state's sixth-rated Class AA team and the No. 2 seed in the ultra-strong south division, won 84 of 86 games to advance to the team quarterfinals against Red Wing.
"Our small consolation is that half the state's teams are now on the sidelines with us," Tiger coach Jack Olwell said, "and as good as they are, Century will probably be joining us in just a few days.
"They have the top two individual players in the state but they are in the same section as Mayo. It's a cruel world in girls tennis--even for a team like Century."
The only Farmington entrants to win a game at Rochester were the first doubles team of Ally Midboe and Katie Burgess and the third doubles duo of ShyAnne Spurzem and Tasha Sinha.
The Tigers still have one more competition on their schedule, an appearance at the Section 1AA individual tournament next week. Each section team will enter two singles players and two doubles teams in the tourney.
"We'll be figuring out who will play for us over the next couple of days," Olwell said.
