Andrew Peterson netted four goals and Austin Krause earned his first varsity win as the Farmington boys’ hockey team cruised to a 7-2 win over Winona Tuesday night at Bud King Ice Arena.

The Tigers (1-1-1) scored at least two goals in each period and Ryan Shoening and Marques Words scored their first varsity goals in the victory.

Peterson opened the scoring at 4:38 of the first period. Grant Hauswirth picked up the lone assist. The Winhawks (2-2-0) answered just 21 seconds later to tie the score at 1-1. Hauswirth put the Tigers on top with a goal from Corey Rudrud with 24 seconds remaining in the period to give Farmington a 2-1 lead after one.

Three straight goals from Peterson to start the 2nd period opened the game wide open. He added an even strength tally at 5:04, a power play marker at 7:50 and a short-handed goal at 10:04. Hauswirth picked up assists on the first two while Dan Block earned an assist on the second. Peterson’s fourth goal of the game was unassisted.

“[Peterson’s] speed is his biggest asset and he used it to his advantage,” head coach Keith Revels said. “They just had no one that could skate with him.”

Winona would score with under a minute to play in the frame and the Tigers took a 5-2 lead to the final period which saw two firsts for Farmington as Shoening, with help from John Donnelly and Michael Giebel at 2:20 and Words from Kevin Olund at 7:56 on the power play added their first varsity goals to cap the scoring.

Farmington finished 2-for-4 with the man advantage while keeping Winona off the board in four chances. Revels said the power play is getting better but there is plenty of room for improvement.

“We still need more patience and composure with the puck,” Revels said. “Nothing fancy, just getting the puck to the net right now.”

The Tigers will travel to Owatonna on Thursday to take on the Huskies at Four Seasons Center. Puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
