Girls Basketball: Second half rally falls short

6 points, 6 assists, 3 steals

The Tigers nearly dug themselves out of a huge huge hole but a second half rally fell short in a 55-41 loss Tuesday night at Owatonna.

Owatonna (2-0) jumped to an early 8-0 lead and led 33-19 at halftime before the visitors put together an 11-0 run to cut the deficit to 40-35 midway through the second period.

Owatonna finally put the game away with a flurry of free throws in the closing minute of play.

"Overall, the team played the best they have played this season, especially in the second half" coach Sondra Chadwick said. "The girls are beginning to learn the level of defensive intensity we need to play with.

"We are making smarter choices in our shot selection and we had 14 assists which means we are setting up each other for the best shot and moving better without the ball."

Chadwick said she was especially pleased with the play of freshman Abby Gallus who came off the bench to spark the second half comeback with six points and four rebounds.

Mariah Mincke bounced back from a scoreless night against Rochester John Marshall to lead the Tiger offense with 16 points.

"Mariah was more aggressive to the basket and that gave her higher percentage shots," Chadwick said.

Senior Isis Alexander had her best game of the young season, scoring nine points and handing out four assists.

Freshman point guard Sofia Chadwick totaled six points, six rebounds and three steals.

Farmington (0-3) continues its early season non-conference schedule Friday night at Rosemount.
