Boys Golf: A new game in town

Trevor Hockert (top) and Matt Provost
Lost by a stroke in 4-ball match play

Farmington stepped out of its customary dual meet format and tried something completey different against Rosemount Wednesday, May 4, at Emerald Greens Golf Club.
That something was a four-ball match play format pitting four pairs of golfers from each school against each other.
When all was said and done and the scorecards tallied, the Irish prevailed by an 11.5-4.5 margin.
The top Tiger duo consisted of Jacob Hansen and Mitch Reed who scored 1.5 points while splitting the round. The tandem of Matt Provost and Trevor Hockert lost by a stroke and also scored 1.5 team points.
The team of Tommy May and Cooper Loew lost by two strokes and gained a half point. The pairing of Kevin Olund and Mike Dalhed also scored half a point, losing by five total strokes.
While the end result wasn't what coach Jon Holmes had in mind, the new format received positive reviews.
"It was well-received by the players and will be something we will be doing in future matches," Holmes said. "Match play is a major part of golf to learn. It forces players to stay mentally focused on every shot."
