Even with a boat load of players on the sidelines with injuries, Tiger coach Paul Sorenson was hoping for his team's first-ever home field win Monday night, May 9, against Holy Family.
What he got was a quality effort against the Waconia private school that came up a goal short in a 5-4 double overtime loss.
"It was disappointing," Sorenson said. "I feel terrible for the guys. We need to learn each time out and take something away from this hard-fought loss."
Farmington jumped to a 2-0 lead after the opening period but from there until time ran out, the score bounced back and forth like a yo-yo. Holy Family scored the game-winner with a minute to play in the second sudden death overtime period.
"We just couldn't get any separation," Sorenson said.
Matt Ackerman had his second straight three-goal night for the Tigers in the losing effort and freshman midfielder Corey Rudrud added his first varsity goal. Jake Bauman assisted on two of the Tiger scores.
Sorenson praised the efforts of his thrown-together defensive unit anchored by Blair Berg and goalie Charlie Weierke and also lauded the play of Rudrud and fellow ninth-graders Kevin Clifton, Michael Thompson and Dan Block.
"I thought Blair and Charlie had their best games of the season," he said. "We just couldn't muster enough offense to put it away."
