Jake Bauer 6-1, 7-5 winner vs. Holy Angels |
Monday and Tuesday the Tigers fell to Red Wing 7-0 and Holy Angels 5-2 in Missota Conference play, giving them six matches in their last eight school days.
Highlights were few and far between in the loss to the talented Wingers who won handily at every position. All seven of the matches were decided in two sets.
The only Farmington entry to win as many as two games in a set was the second doubles team of Grady Hauswirth and Jon Zakoski who lost 0-6, 2-6.
"This was the toughest team we have seen so far," Tiger coach Jack Olwell said, "and we still haven't seen Shakopee who is rated in the top ten in the state. Most of our guys battled hard but with little hope of defeating their opponents."
Tuesday in Richfield things went much better in the loss to the Stars.
Seventh-grader Jake Bauer provided a quality 6-1, 7-5 at second singles and Jon Zakoski won a war of attrition at fourth singles, winning 6-4, 7-6 (4).
"Jake played a solid match, out-hitting and outmaneuvering his opponent throughout," Olwell said. "He got down early in the second set but swept the last four games for the win."
Olwell also had some consoling words for freshman Bennett Lagro who lost 0-6, 1-6 at first singles.
"Bennett is taking his lumps playing some very good players," he said. "He's gaining valuable experience...He competes well and can hit with almost anyone, but he's still learning how to dictate play."
Lagro and his teammates will have plenty of time to work on their game as they close the regular season with back-to-back-to-back matches Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
