Sebren Baer banked in a jump shot from the top of the key as time expired to give the Tigers a hard-fought 44-43 Missota Conference victory over Holy Angels Tuesday, Jan. 18, in Richfield.
"We ran the play we wanted but didn't exactly get the shot we were looking for," a relieved coach Shane Wyandt said following the game. "I was really proud of how our kids scrapped tonight.
"In the last game against Shakopee I wasn't pleased with our effort but there were no problems with that tonight. We played hard the whole game even when things weren't going our way."
Things went well enough early when the visitors jumped to a 10-2 lead before the Stars went on a 12-0 spurt of their own to take the lead. The teams battled like that the rest of the half and went to the break tied at 21-21.
Holy Angels led most of the second half with Farmington's first lead of the period coming at 42-41 with just under two minutes remaining.
Sam Keis drained two free throws to give Holy Angels a one-point lead with 1:10 to play and after Josh Ruthenbeck failed to convert a shot from close range Holy Angels had its fate its own hands.
But the Stars missed three straight from the line down the stretch, the last with 9.3seconds left, to set up Baer's game-winner.
"This was a good win for us," Wyandt said. "We know that we aren't going to outshoot a lot of teams so we have to do other things well. One area where we are going to have to improve is running our half court offense.
Alex Michels led the Tigers with 14 points and Darren Beenken added 12 at they raised their record to 6-7 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Baer finished with eight points and Ruthenbeck chipped in with seven.
Next up for the Tigers is a Missota Conference match-up with Northfield Friday night at Tiger Gym.
