Girls Basketball: Sabers hand Tigers first loss 41-34

Elena Koch
8 points, 4 rebounds vs. Shakopee

A stubborn Shakopee defense limited Farmington to just 12 second half points as the Tigers lost for the the first time this season 41-34 Friday night, Jan. 14, in Shakopee.
"It was a great high school game," Tiger coach Jason Berg said. " A good crowd and lots of energy and it was one of the most physical games I have been around.
"We did a real nice job of defending but we lost our composure a little on offense in the second half and that resulted in a lot of turnovers."
Defense predominated at both ends of the floor in the first half although the Tigers eventually turned some good shooting (10 of 17 in the half) into a 20-12 lead with five minutes remaining.
But the Sabers scored the next 10 points and Farmington needed Jordan Bridges jumper at the buzzer to hit intermission tied at 22-22.
Both teams went cold in the second half with the visitors not scoring their first basket until 7:30 remained in the game.
The Tigers cut their deficit to two points twice in the late going, the last time at 32-30 with 3:30 left in the game, but could never draw any closer.
Turnovers (21) and poor second half shooting (4 of 12) proved the difference in the loss that snapped Farmington's unbeaten streak at a school record 11 games and left its league record at 2-1. Shakopee is also 11-1 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the conference.
Bridges led the Farmington offense with 13 points on 6 of 9 shooting from the field. Taylor Meyer and Elena Koch each added eight. Bridges, Meyer and Koch also each finished with four rebounds.
The Tigers will try to start a new winning streak Tuesday Jan. 18, when they entertain Holy Angels at Tiger Gym.
