Nadia Lorencz tied for first in vault and broke her coach's school record in winning floor exercise to help the Tigers to a third place finish at the Missota Conference Championships held Friday night at the Northfield Gymnastics Club.
Defending Class AA state and conference champion Northfield dominated the competition with 150.6 points. New Prague ranked second at 146.15, followed by Farmington 140.95, Chaska/Chanhassen 136.45 and Red Wing 126.2.
Lorencz scored 9.575 to top the vaulting score sheet and then garnered 9.8 in floor to break coach Lynn (Gramentz) Bauman's previous school mark set in 1991. Lorencz also placed sixth on the uneven bars with a mark of 9.175. Her meet total of 36.45 points was fourth in the all-around standings
"Wow"," Bauman said. "Nadia's floor performance was definitely the highlight of the night."
Kiana Lord scored 9.625 in floor exercise to finish second and also ranked eighth in vaulting (9.175). Lord totaled 35.75 points and placed fifth in all-around.
Kylie Wharton was the only other Tiger to crack the top ten, placing eighth in floor with a score of 9.1.
Although the Tigers broke the 140-point barrier and finished third as a team, Gramentz said it could have done better if not for a sub-par showing on the balance beam.
"We struggled with connections and had a couple of falls," she said. "If we can pull together our beam we will be golden."
Next up for the Tigers is the Section 3AA Championship meet scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 16 at Park of Cottage Grove. One team and top-scoring individuals from that competition advance to the Class AA state meet the following weekend.
"We're looking forward to it," Bauman said.
