Baseball: Double plays spell double trouble

Ty Vincent 1b, 3b, run scored

The Tigers loaded the bases with one out in both the sixth and seventh innings but double play balls wiped out both rallies in a 5-4 Missota Conference loss to Holy Angels Monday afternoon at Tiger Field.

The loss dropped Farmington's early season record to 1-2; 0-2 in conference play.

"This is the type of game we need to win," coach Mike Winters said. "We just didn't execute defensively (4 errors). We were in position to make plays and didn't follow through. We need to clean that up.

"Overall our pitching and hitting were fine, although we do need to get more production out of the bottom of our batting order."

After the Stars jumped to a quick 1-0 lead in the second off starter Jonathan Ellis, the Tigers tied the count in the bottom of the inning on a triple by Ty Vincent and a single by Drew Hegseth.

The visitors led 5-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth when all the locals could milk out of their first bases-loaded opportunity was one run on another Hegseth single.

In the bottom of the seventh a second sacks-filled chance produced two more scores, one on a Jake Baskerville hit and the other on an error, before a double play slammed the victory door.

"I did like the way that our kids never quit," Winters said. "They fought until the end."

Ellis worked the first six frames and lost for the second time this season. He allowed three earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and three walks. Andy Morris pitched a scoreless seventh inning, striking out the side.

Hegseth, Vincent and Spencer each had two base hits for the Tigers who finished with nine.

The Tigers head to Northfield Thursday afternoon in search of their first Missota Conference win.
