Boys Golf: Tigers a good match for Irish

Ryan Kelly shot a team-low 77 in the season opener

Ryan Kelly shot a five-over par 77 and Tommy May finished at 78 to lead the Tigers to a 15.5-8.5 match-play win over Rosemount Wednesday afternoon at Fountain Valley.

The match-play format is little-used in high school play but Tiger coach Jon Holmes liked the idea of getting 12 head-to-head matches under his team's belt before tournament style play begins next week.

"We are playing them (Rosemount) a home-and-home match play series this year," he said. "We had a promising start, because we'll only need nine more points to win when we go to their place."

Holmes was also pleased his four low scorers totaled a respectable early season score of 320 even without varsity regular Erik Holmstrom who missed the meet after undergoing minor surgery.

In addition to the team-low efforts of Kelly and May, Mitch Reed finished at 81, Tony Lalani 84, Jake Hanson 84 and Grant Hauswirth 84.

Other Farmington scores included Josh Cordes 86, Nathan Anderson 87, Jake Jensen 88, Garrett Heidelberger 92, Sam Newcomb 100 and K.C. Blake 102.

Next Wednesday (April 18) the Tigers play in the Prior Lake Invitational at the Wilds before opening their Missota Conference season on Monday, Apr. 23, at Deer Run Golf Course in Chanhassen..
