Instant offense propels Tigers past Wingers

Red Wing controlled the clock but the big-play Farmington offense controlled the scoreboard in a 35-14 Missota Conference victory over Red Wing Friday night at Tiger Stadium.

The win kept the No. 8-rated (Class 5A) Tigers unbeaten at 3-0 and 2-0 in Missota Conference play. After two league games, Farmington and Holy Angels are tied atop the standings.

"We obviously did some good things tonight," coach Mark Froehling said. "Darren (Beenken) did a great job throwing the ball and running our offense. Our receivers caught the ball, Athen (Ashton) was tough running the ball again and the defense came up with some big plays."

Froehling was also pleased with the absence of turnovers on the post-game stat sheet, an eyesore the first two games.

But the veteran Tiger coach admitted there was still plenty of work to be done between now and the end of the season.

"We had way too many penalties," he said,"especially ones that kept the other team moving. I'm OK with the big plays we made but we can't have the defense on the field for so long. We have to clean some things up."

Farmington led 21-0 at halftime despite Red Wing's running 33 offense plays to the Tigers' 21.

The home team took a 7-0 early lead on Ashton's one-yard touchdown run set up by Beenken's 49-yard pass to Johny Dittman.

That lead held up into the second period when the Wingers chewed up over eight minutes of clock in a marathon 16-play drive that ended when Mason Auge made a huge stop on fourth down at the Tiger three-yard line with just over two minutes to play in the half.

That was time enough for the quick-strike Tiger offense to score twice. The first came on a four-yard Beenken run set up by a 73-yard dash by Ashton. The second came a minute later on a 17-yard scoring strike from Beenken to Dittman.

Red Wing got on the board on its opening drive of the second half, an 85-yard march that took 13 plays and much of the third quarter.

Farmington came right back with, what else, a big play. This one was a 69-yard pass-and-run from Beenken to Jordan DeCroock that set up Beenken's second score of the night, a one-yard sneak.

On their next possession, the winners scored again. A 41-yard aerial from Beenken to Mac Bassett set the table and a seven-yarder from Bennken to Dittman provided the points.

The Farmington offense piled up a season-high 438 yards, 221 on the ground and 217 through the air.
Red Wing finished with 258 total yards, only 60 rushing.

Ashton put together his third straight 100-yard rushing night, picking up 142 on just 12 carries. Beenken was a super-efficient 12 for 16 passing for 217 yards and a pair of touchdowns to go with his two rushing scores.

Dittman had the best game of his varsity career with five catches for 80 yards and two touchdowns. Bassett had two grabs for 56 yards and DeCrook one for 69.

Defensively, Auge had a big night with a team-leading seven tackles and 11 assists. Kevin Clifton was in on nine stops and Nick Ruark eight.

John LeBlond recorded two tackles for loss and Clifton and Josh Boatwright shared a quarterback sack. Jack Erickson chipped in with an interception.

Next Friday the Tigers seek win No. 4 when they travel to New Prague for a Missota Conference encounter with the Trojans (1-2, 1-1) who defeated Northfield 48-37 Friday night.
