Volleyball: Tigers 2-2 at Keller Klassic

Tigers 2-2 at Coon Rapids Invitational
The Tigers got their first taste of tournament play this season, splitting four matches and placing 13th at the 16-team Keller Klassic played Saturday in Coon Rapids.

Farmington played competitively in its first two contests, losing 2-0 (25-27, 12-25) to Grand Rapids and 2-1 to Benilde-St. Margaret's (27-25, 18-25, 10-15) in pool play.

"We played quite well in most of our match against Grand Rapids," coach Mike Woody said. "Game two was better than the score indicated; its just Grand Rapids made so many extraordinary defensive plays. Their scrappy defense was the difference.

"The Benilde match was a lot of the same, good volleyball. They also caught fire defensively and made it hard for us to score points in games two and three."

The Tigers continued to play better as the tournament wore on, defeating Fridley 25-17, 25-19 and New Richmond, Wisconsin 25-20, 19-25, 15-10 in their final two games.

The locals dominated in the win over Fridley and battled back from a 12-8 deficit in game three to defeat New Richmond.

"The girls left it all on the floor and it showed," Woody said.

The 2-2 effort was especially impressive as Woody was forced to make several lineup switches due to
a rash of injuries to front line players.

Middle hitters Morgan Cecchettini and Kelsey Lindell were both out, necessitating setter Ruthie Schmitt's move to the middle.

"Summer Skokan was also limited because of an elbow injury," Woody said. "Most of the day, we had two eighth-graders at left and a setter in the middle....Considering all of that, we were still very competitive in all four matches."

The The 2-2 tournament run leaves coach Mike Woody's squad with an overall season mark of four wins and five losses.

The Tigers return to action Tuesday with a non-conference road match at Hastings before resuming conference play Thursday with a home contest against Red Wing.
