Alumni Alley: Ex-Tigers still rate at collegiate level
Cody Eich, University of Minnesota-Duluth
Over the years, a significant number of former Tiger athletes have moved on to compete at the collegiate level and this fall several are doing so for nationally rated teams.
Right at the top of the list is Cody Eich, a junior safety for the University of Minnesota-Duluth football team that is ranked No. 1 in the latest NCAA Division II national poll. Eich is the third leading tackler for the Bulldogs with 19 solos and seven assists through five games. Tiger grad Otimio Masso is a freshman defensive back for UMD.
At the NCAA Division III level, 2010 FHS alum Steven Arentz is a freshman linebacker for the 18th ranked University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire team. In the same poll, Bethel University, where 2009 male Athlete of the Year Derek Waldbillig is a sophomore running back and kick returner, was among teams receiving votes.
Two former Tigers, Wade Fischer and Jimmy Deegan, are starters on the offensive line for William Penn University (Iowa) that currently sits at No. 16 in the NAIA national rankings with a perfect 5-0 record.
2009 Tiger female Athlete of the Year Kirstee Rotty transferred from the University of St. Thomas to St. Olaf College this fall and is back on the volleyball court. The defensive specialist ranks second in digs for the Oles who occupy the No. 13 spot in the NCAA Division III rankings.
Former Tiger track standout Kaitlin Mincke is a redshirt sophomore on the University of Minnesota women's cross country team. The Gophers are rated 27th in the NCAA Division I poll.
