Ben Cline
2-6, 6-4, 7-5 winner at No. 2 singles
All seven matches were competitive but Ben Cline managed the only Farmington win in a 6-1 non-conference loss to Park of Cottage Grove Wednesday afternoon at the Boeckeman Middle School courts.
"I thought we had a very good match, but it wasn't enough to knock them off," coach Jack Olwell said. "They thumped us pretty good last year but we had some real opportunities."
Cline played his best tennis of the young season in a come-from-behind 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory at No. 2 singles.
"It was a magnificent match played by two gentlemen," Olwell said. "This is what tennis was meant to be, two fine athletes giving everything they had...Ben found the right strategy and rhythm at the right time to break his opponent."
Blake Olmscheid's ground strokes were on but his serve deserted him in a 4-6, 2-6 loss at first singles.
Ivan Rodriguez and Bennett Lagro lost for the first time this season at third and fourth singles. Rodriguez played well in losing a 3-6, 5-7 decision and Lagro dropped a back-and-forth 3-6, 4-6 verdict.
The doubles lineup went scoreless but the pairings of Taylor Olson/Jeff Zakoski, Austin Tremmel/Trent Kortenbusch and Austin Rau/Jon Zakoski all made it interesting
"We played well at most flights," Olwell said. "We gave them a scare just about everywhere."
Next Monday the Tigers entertain Faribault before opening their Missota Conference season Tuesday with a road match at Red Wing.
