The Tigers overcame a sluggish first half to defeat Red Wing 2-0 Thursday, Sept. 16, at Tiger Stadium. The victory raised Farmington's season record to 5-3; 1-0 in Missota Conference play.
"We played very poorly in the first half," coach Rob Carpentier said, "even though we dominated play. We were clearly mentally flat and Red Wing played with a lot of intensity."
The Tigers outshot their guests 11-4 over the first 40 minutes but didn't have much in the way of legitimate scoring opportunities.
The second half proved to a different story as Farmington put constant pressure on the Winger net, building an 18-1 shot advantage after intermission.
Devyn Alberts scored the first Tiger goal shortly after the break on a feed from Ashley Kimmel and Kelli Harstad netted the second on a header from Shelby Calhoun with 10 minutes to play.
"I liked the way we took care of business and picked up our play in the second half," Carpentier said. "We have to learn to be mentally as well as physically sharp for the entire 80 minutes."
Goalie Taylor Meyer (91 percent season save percentage) and the defensive corps did an other outstanding job. In each of the five Tiger wins they have shut out the opposition.
Elena Koch, Amber Johnson and Rachel Beck all received high grades from their coach.
"We've allowed seven goals in eight games and only one of them was really the fault of the defense," he said. "They have been our best unit so far."
